WD5000AAKS

May 28th, 2020, 15:54

Hi gurus,

the patient is WD5000AKS which stops spinning after few seconds. I have managed to read ROM and all the modules after hot swap.

Just one head is reading really slowly now, but that is not what I wonder. I have written original ROM to the donor PCB and when I switch off and on the power, the situation is the same as initially: stops spinning after few seconds.

What am I doing wrong?

Probably one head is too weak.

Did you try changing head map in RAM?

This drive is blue with two heads 0,1 I think.
Most likely head 0 is bad.
Replacing the entire HSA for a complete recovery.

Good luck

Hi,

thanks for replies.

I did change the head map, without any effort.

The drive has six heads, number one is the one which reads slowly. It also leaves some bad sectors unread, but on the second reound it reads them fine.

But the odd thing still is that the disk will not become ready on PC3K, not even when the donor PCB has original ROM on it now.
