Hello.

I have a problem with my HDD st4000dm000-1f2168. It constantly starts\stops on its own, according to the increasing value of the SMART "Start\Stop count" attribute. It hangs for a little bit, maxing out the blue graph in Windows Resource Monitor, then unfreezing, and do it all over again if you try to read\write from it. Otherwise, in idle mode, it doesn’t do that start\stopping thing.

I’ll attach screenshots with SMART of this HDD. Also, I have the second HDD of the same model, it works just fine, and "Start/Stop count" is much smaller than it is on the faulty one, despite them working in my PC for the same length of time since I bought them.

My Motherboard is ASUS Z97-PRO.

What may be wrong with it? Is it dying? I’ve tired different SATA wires and different SATA ports on my motherboard, there was no effect on this starting\stopping behavior. I haven’t tried plugging disk up to a different PC though.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, now that’s interesting. I just now took my starting\stopping HDD out of the PC and plugged it through the external adapter I borrowed from my friend recently to USB. This adapter uses external power supply of 12V 3A and HDD works just fine! So, now could it be that my PC power supply is failing? I don’t remember its model exactly and can’t check it due to my cumbersome PC case setup atm, but I remember it was "Bronze class" power supply. But my other HDD and my system SSD and GTX1070 all work just fine. So, I’m confused.

I intended to you advice that try with external case When I read topic. But I saw u tried it.

My desktop making same trouble behavior same disks. I couldn't find why. I guess it could be about SATA ports protocol, or cable /connection problem or mainboard.
Sometimes drives making clicking as like as killed head also. I am confusing mine too )))

is your hdd plugged directly onto a cable coming from the PSU or using some extender/molex-sata adapter or anything like that?
if so, i vote for poor contact at one of the connectors.

i am 99 percent sure your problem is related to the molex connectors.
