Head change tool for ST1000DM010-2EP102

October 19th, 2020, 21:24

Greetings

I searched the net and couldn't find a suitable head change tool for Seagate BarraCuda Compute ST1000DM010-2EP102 drive. It is a single platter 1TB drive with the heads resting on the platter.

Anyone has changed the heads on this drive? Can you direct me at the type of tool you used?

Thanks in advance

Thank you for your reply.

I contacted Apex Tools by mail when I first began searching for a tool. They said they did not check this drive yet. Have you tried using one on this model? The drive has something like a ramp right under the platter so I think a regular E tool may have hard time getting in without scratching the platter.

That HDD seems to be a single head drive. So, no need for tool. Just pull heads upwards.

Of course I use this tool on this hdd but this tool is low profile and you need to use it carefully. it is a heavy instrument so once you remove the head and unscrew the fixing screw you will want to move calmly on the patient disc from which you have already had to remove the head. Don't worry about scratching the platter because if you insert the tool lightly nothing will happen. To familiarize yourself, use it on some donors. Small tip, do not place the instrument too far from the reading head otherwise the head will not rise well. Note, the top of the instrument rests on the hard drive case. Attached you will be able to see your same hard drive model with the tool I am talking about, I took it the day before yesterday

I have to agree, I wouldn’t do it.

everyone is free to do things as they like, I can only say that this tool is easy to use and in 4 years that I have used it I have never had any problems.

It seems that Seagate really are going back to an 'old' design - it is possible to use the HDD Surgery tool for 7200.10/11/12 series on these disks. One little trick I did find though was that it is necessary not to use the screw which holds the head assembly in place to use as the screw to attach the HDDSurgery tool. It is too long and the HDDSurgery tool will not fit in place snuggly. Instead to use a shorter screw, one from the remainder of the lid fits fine. Still a big relief to be able to use a secure tool on these for head-assembly changes.
