I have 2 x WD RED 4tb drives that were set to miror eachother in windows, they have been plugged into the wrong modular power supply cable (Corsair MODULAR cable in an Antec modular PSU). I am keen if at all possible to access this drive(s).

As a result of the wrong cable type the drive none of my drives are recognised by any PC in the bios, I have tried a couple of different PC's.

I have inspected the board closely and cannot see any visible signs of damage. As a starter I have ordered replacement PCB boards for my devices which will not be arriving for many days, which i suppose could end up having the BIOS chip swap by an electronics repair company.

in advance of this, are there any components that are likely to have taken the incorrect voltage which are simple to check?


is there any examples of this device being saved with simple steps from a similar experience or is it toast?

First, you have to check the TVS diode, that in "normal" case have protected your drives.

I'm not a pro, and your PCB seems a little different than what I know, so I cannot guide you more...

The simple thing you can try is : verify if there is a continuity between 12V 5V Ground pins.

The drive have maybe succeeded full protect itself if you found a continuity somewhere.

There is a 5V TVS diode (SUA or 5UA?) plus a fuse ("S"). If there are no other problems, you can remove the diode and bridge the fuse, with obvious caveats.

Measure the resistances of each component first, though.

Thankyou again, based on your suggestion i have tested the following, would these results coincide with your previous train of thought?


meter set to resistance;

green area "S" 2.4 Ohms
yellow area "S" 1.5 Ohms
red area "S" No continuity


Meter Set to diode test;
SUA = probes one orientation = 1.769v
SUA = probes other orientation = 0.183v

ps do you just bridge the top of the fuse by soldering some wire and then proving the continuity?

Hi thankyou for your tip, i have tried that, when the 12v ground pin 11 is the common reference to the 5v ground pins this reads is in "K Ohm" range (for all three measurements), and all other measurement between the 5v gnd and 12v gnd are all very low resistance, like 1 ohm or so.

Can i just say, thankyou massively for this help - IT HAS WORKED!

I did the actual messiest solder job you have likely ever seen, firstly by removing the TVS with a gas solder iron with a bigger tip than id like, that alone didn't get the HDD to work but I tried. I then removed the fuse without any proper tool setup, and managed to get a big ugly blob of solder to stick in its place. i might have melted some plastic along the way but this powered it up !

it did appear in disk manager but i could see it in device manager so i read your posts on the DMDE tool, tried that and bought the license and am getting my data back as i type .

I have had 10.24 TB of drives wrecked this week and my entire life and business was on them. this one repair gets me all the data from my 2 x 4tb "raid" drives containing my business and its such a big thing to get it back.

next up is my 2TB seagate HDD....my 240gb SSD might be too far gone....
