I read on the forums a list of USB > SATA compatible PCBs and for my USB WD Passport 2060-771761-001 I would need SATA 771692.
However, they did not mention if any of the other numbers of the model need to match. I see many SATA 771761 PCB boards but they have different numbers at the end, for example:

2060-771692-001
2060-771692-002
2060-771692-005
2060-771692-006

Being that mine has 001 at the end, does it matter which SATA 771692 I get? Are they all compatible as long as it's 771692?

I'd like to add that I now DO see a difference in some of the 771761 PCBs; the BIOS chip is located in different places. So maybe that makes it non-compatible? Maybe doesn't matter? My question still stands.

Usually the other 3 numbers are not important.

What do you mean usually?

771692 has two ROM sizes -- 256 & 512K. Make sure those match on the patient & donor.

I mean what usually means, that is a great possibility that might work and a small possibility that it doesn't.

Is it somehow possible to use a board with 512K as a replacement for 256K board?

I have two boards (photos attached):
Code:
Model           |Interface| ROM                    | RAM (Hynix)             |
2060-771761-001 | USB     | Pm25LD020 (256K=2Mbit) | H5DU6462CTR-E3C (64MB)  | probably bad
2060-771692-005 | SATA    | Pm25LD040 (512K=4Mbit) | H5DU2562CTR-E3C (256MB) | good

I tried to just flash 256K ROM to 512K chip using CH341A programmer and AsProgrammer software, but HDD doesn't start. (then i flashed 512K ROM from a backup file)

So do I need a board with ROM of exactly the same size? Or, for example, it is possible to physically solder 256K ROM in place of 512K ROM.

i think i haven't had problem with writing 256k rom into 512k flash. Have you verified if it was written ok?

I'm sorry, I've mistakenly copied U14 memory chip instead of U12.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to connect to U12 WSON8 chip to copy its content, 'cause i'm not very good at soldering:-)

:) that kindof explains the dead behaviour...

you can solder thin wires if you are afraid of damaging the chip by desoldering.

That was a good advice! Finally i was able to grab the firmware after hours of soldering. But if I write it to 512Kbit memory chip, HDD just clicks several times and stops. It doesn't even show its name in BIOS.
Of course I'm not sure if the drive is alive.

:) i said THIN wires, which those are not... :)
anyway, glad it worked and did not damage the chip contacts.
can you try the pcb on a known good drive? It won't start but should not click at least.

Two ideas you could read into or try it:

Fill up the rest of the 256k ROM with zeroes until you reach exactly the 512k
or
double your 256k ROM / fill it from the end with that same file

As always: no responsibility for flames and failure :D
