I've got a WD30EFRX that was in a Synology NAS. I noticed that on one of the periodic Extended SMART tests, that it was hung at 90%. Apparently, this is a somewhat common issue with Synology and WD drives. I wasn't aware of this right when it happened, and I immediately ordered two new replacement drives (my other WD30EFRX appears to be perfectly fine).
I read in a thread about the issue with Synology, that if you take the drive out, run the extended test via the WD DataLifeGuard tools, the pop it back in the Synology, that it will test and run fine. I did that, and it failed WD DLG extended. I popped it back into the Synology, where it passed both the quick and extended tests.
Since I'd already purchased new drives, I decided to pull the WD, and if they ended up being fine, upgrading the 1TB drives in my Synology at a backup location. So, I set out to test this drive. The SMART data itself shows no reallocated sectors, nor any uncorrectable. I've seen a pending count of 1 come and go during all my testing.
I ran badblocks and got this output:
Code:
[liveuser@localhost-live mapper]$ sudo badblocks -b 4096 -wsv /dev/sdc

Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.
Now, after this, I decided to run it through WD DLG again. This time, the quick test failed, but the extended said it found some bad sectors that were repairable. So, I clicked repair, and it said it repaired them and marked the extended test as passed. A follow-up quick test still fails. SMART data at this point still shows no reallocated sectors, no pending sectors, and no offline uncorrectable.

So, at this point, I'm not sure what to make of this.
