Hi,

My first post here. I searched everywhere in the Internet but so far I have not found any good answer.

I have one "Seagate BarraCuda 3.5 ST4000DM004" which is somewhat new (purchased a little over 6 months ago).

It is installed on a Synology NAS and it is running 24x7 (I know, it is an SMR drive and should not be used as a NAS disk, but I have an online backup and the important things are sycnhed also with a cloud service).

My question is regarding the following SMART statistics:

Code:
Device Statistics (GP Log 0x04)
Page  Offset Size        Value Flags Description
(...)
0x04  =====  =               =  ===  == General Errors Statistics (rev 1) ==
0x04  0x008  4              14  ---  Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors
(...)

This number is shown when running smartctl with a "-x" option (smartctl -x /dev/sda).

The problem is that this number was zero when the drive was new, and it is increasing about 2 errors/month.

However, this shows only when using "smartctl -x" and the standard "187" SMART is zero:

Code:
SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 10
Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME                                                   FLAGS    VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE
(...)
187 Reported_Uncorrect                                               -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0
(...)
197 Current_Pending_Sector                                           -O--C-   100   100   000    -    0
198 Offline_Uncorrectable                                            ----C-   100   100   000    -    0
(...)

So the question is: how the statistics are showing an increasing number of "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" but the S.M.A.R.T. attribute "187 Reported_Uncorrect " does not report anything?

Should I worry about this disk failing soon?

Attached is the full smartctl output.

Thanks!

Your Hard Drive Current_Pending_Sector is 0 so most probably all sectors are good.

Thank you for your reply. This is also my understanding. I’ve run SATA extended tests as well as Synology volume scrubbing. No errors were reported, but after these two tests the statistics of "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" increased to 17. I have another drive of the same model and this statistic data is zero.

I will keep an eye on the standard SMART Current_Pending_Sector and Reported_Uncorrect which are still reporting as zero. For now I will assume that this ”Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" reported only with “smart to -x” in the statistics session does not represent a potencial problem (unless I can find some reliable documentation about the meaning of this value).

Thanks!

Well, after a few months I'm returning here to document this issue and my findings just in case someone else has the same issue.

In my first post I missed to mention that I'm running BTRFS on this drive. Since then I've received a dozen "Checksum Mismatch" erros on random files.

And I have confirmed that these were in fact corrupted files, and I had to restore these files from backup.

The interesting thing is that no bad sector nor any SMART were was reported. I even run and "Extended SMART Test" that took several hours and it completed without errors. As you can see below the standard SMART values are all OK:

Code:
SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 10
Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:

However this drive is IN FACT FAILING, as confirmed by the btrfs "checksum mismatch" erros and confirmed that the reported files were in fact corrupt. And as I mentioned in the original post the "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" in the SMART Device Statistics kept increasing, now 20 (more or less consistend with the number of "checksum mismatch" errors from btrfs:

I have another drive of the exact same model, age and usage and this other drive has "0" in the "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" value.

At this point I just replaced this drive and will try an RMA, since I cannot trust it anymore.

And it is really strange. I just detected this problem because of the BTRFS checksum feature. Otherwise I would just be getting corrupted files without any notification from the drive. I would just consider bit rot and I would never suspect the drive if the "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" statistics would not keep increasing...

I see three SMART parameters with abnormal high figures that do not go well with such a new drive.
It appears like a interface problem.

I notice that Head Flying Hours also differs.

I would submit a critical bug report to Seagate in respect of the misreporting of uncorrectable errors. I doubt they will do anything, though, if my past personal experience is any guide.

Which ones? I mean, I have two disks of the exact same model running in RAID0, with similar statistics, execpt the "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors". See attached the full SMART output of these two drives just in case (I have only edited out the serial number for privacy reasons).

Anyway, yesterday I replaced the drive that is supposedly failing by a new one of the same model, let's see how things will turn out.

Honestly I also believe they will do nothing, so probably it will be a waste of my time. Anyway the HDD is still under warranty and I will request an RMA.

OK, I just connected the problematic drive to a Windows PC and I'm running the "Long Generic" test from Sea Tools.

Again the "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" keep increasing in the statistics, but all other SMART values are OK.

I have 4 other drives of the same model (being 1 brand new that replaced the failing HDD) and all of them are reporting "0" in this statistics.

Seagate RMA policy says that the drive must be failing to be eligible for replacement under warranty, and so far all tests I've executed returned OK, despite the fact that files stored in this hard disk as getting corrupted.

I am considering this as a bad drive, however I am afraid that Seagate might not replace it via RMA (it is still under warranty) because none of the SMART tests are reporting errors. My last hope is that Sea Tools might find something, let's see.

See https://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/seatools/seatools-test-codes.html

Quote:
A SeaTools Test Code is important when returning a Seagate product under warranty. The SeaTools Test Code proves that the drive has failed diagnostic tests performed by SeaTools.

Seagate understands that there are several legitimate reasons why you might not have a SeaTools Test Code. Please review the following suggestions and if you still need a Self-Service test Code, copy the 8-digit code from the one of the choices below and paste it in to the SeaTools Test Code field on the RMA form.

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAGS VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE
1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate POSR-- 083 064 006 - 191398272
7 Seek_Error_Rate POSR-- 077 060 045 - 49409103
195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered -O-RC- 083 064 000 - 191398272

Those are normal.

Seagate's Seek Error Rate, Raw Read Error Rate, and Hardware ECC Recovered SMART attributes:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/Seagate_SER_RRER_HEC.html

Seagate SMART Attribute Specification:
http://t1.daumcdn.net/brunch/service/user/axm/file/zRYOdwPu3OMoKYmBOby1fEEQEbU.pdf

Normal SATA SMART Attribute Behavior (Seagate):

Thanks. That's my understanding too (these values are normal).

Well, I submitted a bug report to Seagate. They did assign a person to follow up this bug, but he claims that "due to our firewall security restrictions we cannot open any 3rd party link". He did request screenshots of this thread, but I think people will agree that this is beyond reason.

<sigh>

As I see it, it's an obvious bug, but according to Seagate ...

Quote:
Dear Franc,

Thank you once again for contacting Seagate Support and for your feedback and input.

As request we have escalated this case to our manager who took the time to review the issue reported on the forwarded forum link.

>From the description of the users involved on the forum we understood that a user reported an increase on the uncorrectable SMART value errors while using a Barracuda drive on a Synology system.

Please be aware that our Barracuda internal hard drive, specifically the drive with model number ST4000DM004 is not intended to be used within a NAS device or as part of a RAID. For this type of application we recommend instead our Seagate IronWolf drive models. The usage of such drive in a non compatible/tested/designed environment can cause discrepancies on the SMART values as well as unexpected behaviors for the drive. There is also the possibility that the drive was not listed in the compatibility list of the Synology device model which can lead to this type of issues.

Unusual or high increase of SMART attributes such as uncorrectable errors or Head Flying hours are usually an indication that either the drive is failing or is being used on a non compatible - best fit application/device.

Considering that we do not hold any further information from the environment, details of the devices or action held on this drive, is hard to determine with accuracy the root of the issue but taking into account what was described by the user, we would consider the drive as faulty.

This type of issue can happen due to many factors and does not necessarily mean that it is a bug that affects all of our drives and compatible systems but rather a possible failure that somehow led to data corruption or damage on the media sectors.

We can assure you our Barracuda drives on a standard usage environment are used without any issue and so far we have not received any data corruption reports for this model or any similar issue, so you can understand why we cannot treat this issue as general bug for all our drives.

We appreciate very much your time to report this issue and we want to let you know that we take very seriously this type of situations as it helps us improve our products and services.

For the moment we wont be able to investigate the issue further as we are not able to gather more information from the user that reported the issue but rest assure that we will continue to collect feedback from our Customers in regards to this drive in case there is any other similar issue reported.

Best Regards,
Miltos
Seagate Customer Support Team

BTW, I am keeping the "suspected drive" connected to a Windows PC (a headless unit I keep 24x7 for some other purposes). I've installed BRTFS for Windows (I know, ti is not really stable), formatted the drive with BRTFS and copied a lot of data to it.

From time to time I will do some writing to this disk and also do a data scrubbing to see if some part of the disk is experiencing "bit rotting" (which is what I believe it was happening when this disk was connected to the Synology NAS).

I will update here in case I see the "Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors" statistics will increase after some time (it is right now at "33" after a bunch of tests I performed with this disk).
