The very first drive sent in to me for recovery this year was a fine specimen. I was told that someone had opened it and would it be worth looking at, so I said I'd certainly have a look, but if the top cover had been opened we already know that bad things most likely happened.

Yes it was well packaged, inside were layers of bubble wrap and tape to keep it safe. When I heard some rattling noises I was suspicious. Let's see what we've got.

Some of the inside bits are on the outside so not a good start. Some screws falling around. Underneath I couldn't see a PCB which could be a problem too. But once I had a look inside it was starting to make sense.

At least we've found the PCB, phew. But hold on, the shiny bit in the middle is missing. Hmm...there's something else in the package.

And inside every CD case from 1997 is the light at the end of the tunnel. Now I can start on the recovery and get 100% of the data back. Happy 2021.

You have more chance of recovering data from that platter than the Spyglass in the picture ;-)
