hello everyone

i was watching on youtube to see how platter swap can be done and what tools are needed, and i found some people (video number one 7:15) use scotch tape to move the platters from damaged hdd case to the donor (working hard drive) and they use this method so they don't mess up the alignment between the platters. but then in the this video number 2 (5:59) you can see this guy is taking platters out one by one and separate them? so what about the alignment? and why did he use scotch tape in video number 1 to swap the platters and he didn't simply use the device in video number 2? also what do you think about this tool in video 3? can anyone please explain to me. any reply and answer will be highly appreciated.

in first two videos is same person, but videos recorded 4 years apart each other.
In DR everything is related with knowledge and skills, tools availability,...

First you need at least clean chamber(hepa 100) and tool(self made or market available tool) to safely remove heads.
Then you can use one of HDD Recovery Services technique .

And before you start with real case(client drive) try on some other drive to get some good or bed results, which will teach you how to do it on client drive.

But if anything on drive is valuable, outsource it.

Some hard drives need alignment and some hard drives doesnt need rotation alignment. Platter balancing is must. all comes with experience.

Thank you for your reply. Now it makes sense but is there any list or somewhere that i can check before starting work on any hard disk? So that’s way i know what i’m dealing with and be more careful.

Some models have. Specially some old models.the best thing, If you have any paitent drive, first take the donor and carefully rotate the platters and check. Most of time i use this method for unknown drivers.

Yes that's a good way to find out but when i rotate the platters should i be expecting them to spin in a slightly different way or should i feel a certain movement or resistance so i can tell if this model platters need alignment.
