Hi, I'm based in the UK and looking for a company which would be succesfull in retrieving the salvageable data off my toshiba HDD. As you can see on the picture attached one of the platters (on the right) has got some rotational scoring.

I have tried 4 companies so far, 3 in the UK and one in the US. 2 of the UK ones exchanged heads only so it didn't work, the US one took it apart and diagnosed the problem "rotational scoring" and took the pics in a lab environment.

I am aware that this is considered by some come proffesionals as not able to recover.
I understand the data where the scarring occurred is lost forever. However there is in my opinion ample of surface area with what I hope is salvageable data.

The files I'm looking to recover are pictures and videos from my honeymoon. I thought I backed them up, but to my surprise only the data before and after the honeymoon was backed up :(. Both my wife and I are devastated and I still note hope something can be recovered. :(

Please help. Any suggestions welcome.

you would enjoy going on a 2nd honeymoon more than recovering this thing. It may turn out that the good-looking surfaces have lots of minor defects, which render the data pretty much useless.
Btw, did any of the companies get access to used data at all?

Yeah you may be right with the good looking parts but i don't know for sure ...

Already suggested second honeymoon, wasn't taken very well.

The two companies in the UK put all together 3 new sets of heads on without getting any data out. The company in the US called Gillware (apparently specialising in HDD recovery that other companies fail on) didn't attempt to recover data after looking at it. They said where the scorring occurred is where the firmware lives and this cannot be replaced.

This looks very similar to a case I have. If that ring is on surface 0, top on Toshiba, then it’s going to be near impossible. The one I have has only 1 platter, and the SA has been obliterated.

Sorry to hijack head, but Would love to know how to start the drive with just lower heads. Has anyone done it or got any advice?

I'd pass on that one too. It's not always the amount of scoring but where it's scored.

Distant memory of Erkin (I think) doing a video.

Yes, agreed there. Mine has the equivalent of the grand canyon of ring scores.

I am going to check out his YouTube.

So to clarify the ring is on the bottom side of the platter. Does that change anything?

in fact if there is only one ring, there is hope, but my worries are that other surfaces might have invisible defects which make recovered data useless or nearly useless. So at the end we might to the same result of having no usable data after investing a lot of time/money. I have a couple of ideas how i would deal with it even if SA was completely toast, but this is not what i would call a basic service.
