Hello,

I have a problem with this ST2000DM001 Seagate drive (see pic 1 for sheet).

- From what I can make out, it starts spinning, then there are two identical noises and then it stops doing anything and I have to disconnect it and reconnect it for it to do the same thing again. If I just restart, it stays idle (you can listen to the sound file attached "HDD Noises", please disregard old fan noise at the end).
- It is recognized at startup and it says <HDD / S.M.A.R.T. ERROR> (see pic 2).
- It shows up on Acronis True image with the wrong disk size (3858GB instead of roughly 2 TB) (see pic 3).
- It does not show up on Windows.

If anyone can give me some tips about what's happening with this drive, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Phil

Are you sure it's 3858GB and not 3.85GB?

Sounds like the default value from the PCB rather than the correct information being read from the drives SA.

If it's spinning up and then spinning down and isn't recognised in the bios there is very little DIY that can be done. If the data is important contact a DR pro, the drive needs to be checked for firmware / head and media damage.

+1, most likely heads are bad just pray they haven't taken media with them. If data is important DO NOT POWER UP THE DRIVE and consult a pro.

You are both right, it's 3.85 GB. I did not know about the PCB "disk" size.

Ok Thank both you for your inputs. It does not look very good...

One more thing I forgot to mention, Acronis True Image wrongly recognize it as on an "SCSI" interface instead of sata. Also it slows the boot of windows from 20 seconds to five minutes when it is connected. Oh well, I guess this thing is pretty dead according to you both.

Can you give me an idea of what I can expect to pay to have:
1) a diagnostic
2) a repair

Thanks al lot,

Phil

most dr facilities offer free diag, while the recovery fees vary in a pretty wide range, partly because different companies have different prices, partly because it depends on the condition of the surfaces, which is only possible to estimate after investigating the internals. Unfortunately there's not many pro members from france on the forum, but if Belgium is not far out of your way, Marc (https://forum.hddguru.com/memberlist.ph ... ile&u=5963) might be your man, i can help too.

I can recommend William SIMON, AGDI Récupération de données informatiques.
