I have 2 of these usb3 boxes whith internally mounted a WDC WD50NPZZ-00A9JT0 5000,9 Gb HDD.
Using one for a couple of weeks it gave me several data loss, so I decided to test the two devices with HDDscan.

There are slow (factory reallocated?) blocks affecting the first third or quarter of the total blocks.
This problem varies, here I left connected each disk on an usb 3 at the same time and it is the worst case, testing one disk at a time and leaving the other usb3 port empty, the problem is reduced and the range of the affected blocks is reduced to approx 100,000,000 and using the usb2 ports the "bad" range is even smaller.

I've thought that this could be due to the too low current supplied by usb ports but trying various ports on desktopo and laptop PC the problem varies but is still present.

Christal disk mark does'nt start the test and hdtune marks all sectors as bad.

Are these HDD defective?

thanks for watching

Steve

Try smartmontools. There are different parameters that can be used in case of exotic bridge chips.
You might want to find out the chip by looking up the USB device id in the internet.

As you suggested I'been trying smartmontool but one of this devices, listed as sdb, exits with an error and does non display any data (smartmontools -x sdb).
I found also some specific WD tool that performs various tests on sectors and smart data: no errors where found and the 2 drives are given as in excellent condition with no factory realloocated bad sectors.

WD's tools don't generally report the raw values of SMART attributes. Which tool did you use?

I downloaded two tools directly from WD site but don't remember the name. However I've used Christadiskinfo too. HDDscan is not able to perform the smart tests on these drives and this is very strange. Smart data are ok but a high number of very slow sectors makes sometimes tihis HD identified as bad from Windows O.S.. On Linux it is slow but ok, on windows this generates data loss.

Yesterday I carried these HDs back to the dealer that refunded me.
