One of my customer has brought lot of Fujitsu 40 GB IDE hard disks as it was advertised to be brand new pack. Getting these type of disks in new condition was rare opportunity.
Model no. is Fujitsu MHW2040AT -- 40 Gb IDE 2.5". It was packed like new , do not know whether it is actual from reserved surplus stock or refurbed.
but nothing was marked.
These disks are having 2 missing pins . ( pin 41 & 44 ) .While some of the disks have worked , some of his customers are complaining that disks are not getting detected in there automation devices.
I just want to know mystery behind this . Whether these pins are not needed for this is a faulty lot.
Here is pin layout of connector I got from Toms guide ( dont know about its accuracy)
On fujitsu website these drives are mentioned as consumer electronics models & not suitable for NON-IT work .
Can someone pls. throw light on this.

Check whether the 5V(Motor) and 5V(Logic) pins are jumpered together on the PCB.

Also check whether the /Type pin is grounded on the PCB.

Thanks. Disk is not spiining itself that means +5V is crucial and is missing. All hard disks (20+) are having same missing pins but all are in original packing.
I think this could be factory lot of faulty disks.

... but pins 41 and 42 appear to be connected on the PCB, and they then share a common fuse.

Pin 43 appears to be grounded.

I can't see what is happening at pin 44, but it may in fact be N/C (not connected), in which case it would serve no function on the drive and would be ignored.

In short, it doesn't look like anything is wrong. You could test this by omitting the two missing pins from your cable and then testing one of the working 44-pin drives.

I am confused , Pin 44 is assigned different roles 1) Type (0=ATA) and 2) NC. which is right

Page 77 of the manual states that pin #44 is unused.

You have saved lots of my efforts. There are 50 plus hard disks to be repaired , now I dont need to change pin 44.

I have taken disk to one my friend who is expert in repairs , he has checked PCB . +5VCC is present in another pin which is shorted to pin 41.
So even if it is missing drive will get power and missing pin should not cause any issue.
Manufacturer must have removed pins for unknown reasons.
But still disks are not having detection so we concluded that even adding missing pin 41 will not improve situation .
I am giving us repair work.

There is an smt fuse at pins 41 and 42.

My friend has checked all components , he found Fuse also intact. When powered disk spins indicating that it is receiving power.
There could be some problem with other components or may be this factory rejected or factory seconds lot.

Master/slave issue by any chance? or CS?
