Could you upload the ROM? I could parse it and extract the CPs.

So demanding ..... :lol: I've read the rom at the default and also increase to the upper boundary HddDonorMarket used.

That example has 0xDFC defects and has also overflown the G-list. A full track dump might help to determine what is going on. As I see it, the G-list can only hold a maximum of 0x7FE defects before it overflows.

BTW, it is evident that MRT doesn't understand that CP IDs are now 2-byte values rather than the single byte IDs in earlier models.

I have extracted most of the ROM resident CPs. Some CPs don't appear in the CP table, so my tool doesn't find them.

The included CPlist.txt file provides ID/name/location/size/checksum info for each CP.

These are solved cases - so there's no issue for me. I thought they might help collective understand the OP's problems, as the drives present the same way before using PC3K features to get at the data.

ISTM that UA goes to pot if the g-list overflow and/or the p-list corrupts. AFAICS PC3K copes with this by allowing you to first clear the lists, if that doesn't work you cant ignore them using the pc3K utility to read in either LBA or PBA. Applying this to the OP's problem, assuming the g-list overflowed - Can mrt clear it ? if not clear/checksum in the ROM and push it back. If the p-list is corrupt can mrt fix modules? A new/blank dd could be written but you're going to dump translation which may or may not be important depending on the recovery.

At least that what I think is going on - I've been known to be wrong before :lol:

@Lardman, thanks for your resource dumps. I understand that your cases are solved -- I was just trying to understand the structures of the defect lists.

MRT doesn't seem to be a very good Toshiba tool. PC3K doesn't inspire me with confidence, either. In fact the resource dumps in the Files Area both had single-byte CP IDs, so it would appear that they were produced by an earlier version of PC3K.

I think I can manually clear the OP's G-list, if he can manage to provide one.

From using it, it does feel to be the least developed of the utilities available. A quick google shows Dr-Kiev was right on the SMR making the p-list even more important for a decent recovery, if I understand the workings of SMR correctly.

I've not had time/inclination to look at the ROM directly (I know I should, but I bought PC3K so I wouldn't need to learn it) if you tweak it I'd be interested to see if that fixes the UA access.

If I get the time later and the heads hold out, I might take another look at that drive and see which one fixes the UA problems either dumping P or scrubbing the G, I suspect both are needed and in it's current state I can't see a way of doing either from within PC3K (at least not easily).

The G-list and P-list are in the SA, not in the ROM. Some CPs are ROM resident, some are SA resident, and some have copies in both places.

I'd expect fragmented in places but DR results from a scrape. Have to have a play with the read option within pc3k.

I know p is stored as an accessible cp but thought g was one of those transient things created from the dark regions of places we can't get at directly - I assumed this was rom based.

In the drives I've posted the g-list edit/clear function is not available from pc3K (I don't recall if they if they ever were) so there is no way to clear the g-list I can see from within it forcing it to be bypassed with the until rather than fixed.
