Broken electronics on HGST SAS 1,2TB HUC101212CSS600

Hi,
I'm new to here, but I'll try. When replacing the PC power supply, I incorrectly connected the power connector and the power supply damaged the electronics of the disk. The TWO disks were in RAID1, so both disks are identical. But the source damaged two disks.

My question is. It will fail if I buy a similar drive but with a different firmware and have the FW board replaced. The disk should spin up and start properly, right?

I doubt that I will find an identical disk on the Internet with identical FW


What do you think about that, please?

Modular PSU - Didn't change the cables ?

Flip the board over unscrew the PCB and post a high resolution photo. What's the PCB number google suggests 006-0827739.

Yes EVGA fully modular PSU

The problem was that I used a cable from one power branch for half of the 5-bay storage and another half for another 5-bay from the other branch. They died 2x 1,2TB and in another position 10TB SAS. Other SATA drives are fine. But they were taken away by SASy

I send photos in full resolution. Is that enough?

Maybe it will be enough to remove a component (Surge protection) for data recovery?


On ebay I found the same disks, both PN and type, but they have different firmware: - (A469 vs A440)

Grab a multimeter.

Fuses (red) should have continuity, Diode (blue) should have continuity in one direction.

You should be able to bridge the fuse that's blown just to recover data - solder blob or small wire. Apply the power without the pcb off the drive first though just in case the magic smoke escapes from somewhere else.

Your English is better than mine - don't worry about it

The fuse is an inline component it has no connection to ground so it can't be "short" (by which we mean connected to ground). Both fuses should have continuity, the right hand one is blown, as a result the power the track (road) carries is stopped at that point. As the fuse is the first component on the track the power it's going nowhere.

But if I remember history, the 320GB Seagate Savio 15k I don't think it started when I didn't plug it into the controller.

That's the theory. We don't know if there was any damage after the fuse, but if there's a problem with the power then only the PCB will be damaged.

If there are no problems, connect the PCB to the drive and save any important data - you really should replace the wire/solder bridge with a fuse if you continue to use the drive, just in case the same thing happens again.

you are a god! I made a tin jumper. I was just struggling with my very cheap old micro-solder. It's not very nice, but it will serve its purpose. First I "fixed" one disk. Backed up data. Then I did the same on the second disc. And now the synchronization goes to RAID1.

I can't say what fuse to replace with I'm afraid - someone with more electronics knowledge will be able to give you a suitable value and SMD size.

I'm guessing the smaller fuse is 2A, fast acting, 0402 size. It should be available from Farnell, RS Components, Digikey, Mouser.
