Problem after secure erase

September 29th, 2021, 18:21

Hello all,

I found this forum googleing for info. I hope someone can help me.

I made a secure erase to a ST8000DM004 drive with gparted. It said it would take about five hours and that the drive would not report when the process finishes.

I left it working for 8 hours to be safe and then poer-off the pc.

After rebooting gparted throws an error: Input/output error during read on /dev/sda. After that it shows the drive as unallocated. If I try to create partition table I get another I/O error writing.

Fdisk does not show the unit and Windows 10 does not recognize the disk.

GsmartControl does not show any SMART errors.

Is there anything I could do to revive him or should I throw it to the bin?

Never mind, I found the drive was locked by password (null password in fact). It seems to work now.

I wonder why none of the above utilities warned me about it, especially gparted as it was the app that put the password on the disk.

I don't think 8 hours is long enough. That would require an average data transfer rate of 278 MB/s.

If you examine your drive with CrystalDiskInfo, I think you'll find that it is locked with a password that was set by GParted.
