Hi, I have a weird issue. My tower PC has 8 HDDs. I replaced one of them to 16TB. Also, I did unplugged some of SATA power cables and did organize those and connected back.
Rebooted the tower PC. Then, one of old hard disk (5TB) is not detected. Before I installed the new HDD, I checked status of connected HDD with Crystal Disk Info. All of disk were in good condition.
Swapped the power cable on the problem 5TB, didn't work. put it in HDD deck didn't work, noticed it's not spinning at all. Just in case, I put the HDD deck with 5TB to my laptop. It's not working too.

Started to wondering why that happen, so I have another hard disk already formatted. I put that in the tower PC. Same issue happened. it doesn't spin and detected. So, seems like after I connected to SATA power cable, HDDs died. I've been adding several HDDs in the machine, but never had a problem like this.
Does anyone know why that happening? and any chance to recover the 5TB like replacing a board on HDD?
Thanks

Did you do this?

Warning: do not interchange modular PSU cables:

If so, then see ...

you mean connect SATA power cable to other outputs? No, I didn't do that.
All SATA drives are connected to SATA output 1-4. EVGA support says I can connect SATA to PERF1.2. I did connect long time ago, and it was fine

And are they all using EVGA sata power cables?

If you have 8 drives and and 4 outputs then does the other drive on on the same output cable as the dead drive spin? Do you see 6 or 7 drives. That will point you towards a cable or a connector problem, either way Id stop plugging drives in for the time being until you find out.

@duhust, check the TVS diodes and fuses on your HDD PCBs. That will tell us whether your PSU killed your HDDs.

If you need help with this, upload photos of your PCBs.

If your PSU is powering up all 8 drives at once, then that may explain why they failed. This is because the current draw on the 12V rail is very high during this time and only settles down once the drives are spinning.

That made me worry, and started to guessing why that happened. OK, so, my answer is no. EVGA SATA was in the PSU box, wasn't enough. And, I have extra SATA power cable from CORSAIR PSU, and I used it. Is that why the 5TB HDD suddenly dead? I thought all SATA power cables are universal thing, but that's not?
If not, if I buy some SATA power cables from somewhere else, that will be safe for PSU from any companies? Or still have compatibly issue?

>If you have 8 drives and and 4 outputs then does the other drive on on the same output cable as the dead drive spin?
Yes, other drives including the new 16TB, they all working fine. Weird thing is, I connected the new 16TB and the problem 5TB to the SATA cable from CORSAIR, didn't work. But, the 16TB is working fine after I switched to SATA power cable from EVGA PSU.

I just ordered PCB of same model HDD. and also ordered tools. I will upload when I receive the tools. Hopefully, I will receive it in a week or so.

Yes, but it was fine before I installed the new 16TB

Do not mix cables from different PSUs. The pinout is not standardised. You have most likely killed a TVS diode and fuse.

ohhhh. OK, good thing is found the reason. But, can't believe those cables are not standardized.
I hope swapping PCB (copy/paste BIOS program) will make it recover...

That would be far too sensible. Evga are Corsair are different https://solosleeving.com/psu-cable-compatibility-and-pinouts/ it looks like you put 12v down the 5v rail.

If you're lucky damage will be limited to a couple of components as fzabkar suggests. What's the make and model of the 5TB drive? and can you upload pictures of both sides of the pcb, this will help us determine if it's a DIY job.

I totally overestimated about the cables. But, thanks for pointing out, and led me to the answer.

My 5TB is Western Digital WD50EZRZ-32GZ5B1
I already ordered PCB that much number on my HDD. WD PCB 2060-800001-005 (WD100301_WD50EZRZ-32GZ5B1)
Also a tool kit for that, I only can take a photo after I receive the kit.
Plus, ordered CH341A 24 25 Series EEPROM Flash BIOS USB Programmer + SOIC8 Clip
Physically replacing the chips seem way harder to me, but using the programmer kit looks good for me.
As I mentioned, I also tested with another formatted drive, and that one is dead too. Since it doesn't have any data. I should also buy PCB for this, and will use it as test

The easiest and safest approach would be to remove/replace the 5V TVS diode (D3) and bridge/replace the zero-ohm resistor (R43).

BTW, I suspect that the serial flash memory IC is a 1.8V type, whereas your reader is probably a 3.3V device.

Thanks for pointing out.
Videos I found the way to use the programmer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta_PPndnCTk
https://youtu.be/hf60cxf5PIU?t=50

In a comment, someone asked "Won't 3.3v supply kill the 1.8v bios chip?"
The uploader answered "Use 1.8v Adoptor who is tell u to use directly "

I guess I will need to use that one too

I finally received 2 donor boards and the tool
WD PCB 2060-800001-005 (WD100301_WD50EZRZ-32GZ5B1)
Toshiba PCB G3626A

I just looked at back side of donor boards,(attached photo) but I couldn't find how much voltages are. How do I check?

Read the markings on the chips and locate the datasheets.

I still think working on the patient pcbs is the way forward - jumping straight into reprogramming roms could end very badly.
