Must have been under a rock or somewhere. Has anyone tried one of these?

https://www.hddheadtools.com/product/20 ... connector/

Was previously advised to remove caps by Ace when soldering, but this seems to not need any soldering skills at all and just screw on. Did anyone buy one yet to try?

Still need to unlock boards to fix or get into SA to do repairs and head maps etc, but this does seem to reduce the risk of screwing the original PCB.

Thought anyone?

And yes, they work and are very helpful :)

@Eastcoast, you still need to remove those 4 capacitors.

Well,
Yes and No ,Depends on Family ,But As a Practice is better to get them removed and also the clock "crystal"

wondering what the point is in removing the crystal once you removed the caps...

If you don't remove the caps, you end up with a double termination. That results in an impedance mismatch.

Out of interest, which family don't you need to remove the caps?

Absolutely No Point

I am not sure what it does. But in some PCBs like the 800035 it is needed.

Do you mean "810035"?

https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/H78377fae516c48e785fb7d318bf41898i/WD-2060-810035-000-Unlocked-PCB-Lockless-Circuit-Decryption-Logic-Board-for-WD50NDZW-WD40NDZW-Hard-Drive.jpg

The photo isn't very clear, but after you remove the SATA coupling capacitors, I can't see how the bridge IC can have any impact. The only way the bridge can affect the MCU is if there is an alternative communications pathway between the two chips. Therefore it seems pointless to remove the crystal. :-?

Yes I did mean 810035.

I recovered many ultralights but never removed the crystal, it works after removing caps.

I think this picture is what steered me in the wrong direction.
Good news is removing the crystal had no effect on the SATA connection.

1, 2, 3, 5 ???

What happened to 4?

Not sure that I'd want to send my data there:

Different boards have different numbers.
On these boards the 4 is replaced with a 5.
Some boards have now replaced the 4 or 5 with 91 (or 94 can't remember off hand).
Most USB-C boards have no numbers, so you do a continuity test to find the pinouts.

Do you mean E71, E72, E73 and E75?

Yes. For example the 810012 PCB has E71, E72, E73 and E76.

ISTM that the easiest way to find the pinout is to find a photo of a SATA PCB with the same MCU and then visually trace the differential pairs from the MCU to the connector.

I am sure you are right. But the caps are always in the same place. So its a two minute job to find the pinout with a MM.
