Hi,

My Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL, has a HHD Drive and a SSD Drive. The HDD, D drive has suddenly disappeared. I haven't accidently deleted or done anything out of the ordinary for it to suddenly be missing, the only action I can think is that I updated the BIOS a month or so a go as I kept getting notified by Lenovo to do so.

I still have some files and games that were stored on the drive but currently can't access them for obvious reasons. I've checked the disk management and can't find the drive there either.

I've checked the BIOS and there is a Hard Disk and NVME SSD listed, so its being recognised in the BIOS. I've changed the BIOS under 'Storage' its from RST Mode to AHCI and reverted back when this didn't work. I've re-seated the drive, removed the hidden drivers from device manager for the HD and am running out of options.

I have attached three images.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

These drive are notoriously poor. When they start to fail it's best to leave if turned off until you have a plan as they have a nasty habit of etching rings on the the platter surface. If it's not clicking, ticking or scraping you could risk it if the data isn't valuable. Odd that it should be seen in the bios but not disk manager - I wouldn't normally suggest usb but if you have an adapter handy try hooking it up via usb after windows has booted.

Grab a copy of DMDE check if that can see the drive. If not try a linux live cd, If neither of those show the physical drive (don't worry about drive letters yet) there are very few DIY options as it's likely to be either physical damage or firmware corruption neither of which are DIY fixes.

The fact that CrystalDiskInfo cannot retrieve a SMART report would suggest that the drive cannot reach the SA, ie it has internal problems.
