first post...happy to find this nice forum

i have to repair a dead SAMSUNG HDD (no sounds at all no clicking or nothing) and i have no idea where to start

there is the pcb for sale on ebay and i want to buy it...

Why do you think that your drive will work without a "fuse" on the 5V supply?

You mean theres a fuse missing on the board?
Thats odd. Maybe burnt but missing fuse is wierd.
Could you point where it's missing?
What's the standard rating for the 5V fuse?

Yours is missing the zero-ohm resistor (aka "fuse").

I suspect that your 5V TVS diode may be shorted.

Alright then, it does look similar.
The 5V diode - is that a regular 5V zener or something special?
The 0 ohm resistor is just a jumper or a real fuse?

The resistor is probably what is termed as a "fusible resistor". Depending on the actual fault with your drive, you could simply replace the resistor with a wire link.

BTW, ISTM that your 5V TVS diode has been removed and resoldered, or perhaps it has been replaced. In any case the stripe appears to be at the wrong end (ie the diode has been installed backwards), but I'm not completely certain, as the photos are not clear in that area.

You really need to tell us the full story, or at least get more info from the drive's owner.

I found out now the dull story is that it belongs to my friend, who tried to repair the HDD before (appearantly with
A HDD repair company).

I don't have rhe repair history or the proccess log.

The diode is backwards.

Can you let us know which "HDD repair company" is responsible for this abortion?

The second TVS doide solderd the same direction.. The
Line Mark is in the same side.
So right now i need to (correct me if i wrong):

1. Find a 5.0V zener diode with same pcb dootprint
2. Find a 1206 jumper
3. Solder them both - where the line on the diode is in the side closer to the HDD motor. The jumper where the missing component.
4. Power up and check to see if work.

About the hdd repair company, i don't have a name but it might be a local computer store who tried to fix it.

Yes, that's about it. However, don't use a zener. See my FAQ for part numbers and suppliers.

I would test the board off the drive before installing it.

It is a common mistake to get "DR company" and "Local computer Store" mixed up.

well, problem solved.

the drive is in WORKING condition!

i could get a 5V zener and a jumper but i got lazy...so i bought the whole board (from the ebay link above).

replaced it, connect to PC and its working again.

the 5V TVS diode indeed was solderd the wrong way as fzabkar saied, and the jumper was missing.

i'll upload a photo soon of the new board but right now the data is being backuped...

do you think the drive is safe to use now? how do i now for sure?
by the way, how do i change the thread subject? i want to add it "SOLVED"

It's a good thing that you didn't use a 5V zener. A 5.6V or 6.2V maybe, but definitely not a 5V.

Hello fzabkar!

I'm Uday Kiran. I'm from India.
I have a Samsung Hard Disk Drive. Apparently an old one. Model No. HD321HJ. I've been using it as secondary storage for my desktop computer. It stopped working suddenly. I notice no clicking sound or no buzz sounds. I've tried accessing it through an external case but no luck. It is not getting detected. I'm looking for solutions online and thankfully found this forum and this topic. Can you please help me out with this?

This drive contains a lot of data. I should call memories instead! Please find the attached photographs of the disk.

@Kiran, your PCB has a great deal of corrosion near the SATA connectors and MCU. Try cleaning up the area with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush.

I suspect that the PCB may be unsalvageable, in which case try to find a replacement board from the same model and firmware version.
