Hi,

I have a Seagate ST500LT012 2.5" disk in which I'd like to clear the SMART self-test log and reset only the "Command Timeout" attribute. The disk has been working fine for the last three years, but there's an aborted extended test in the log and 2 command timeouts, enough for GSmartControl et al. to complain.

I did a search before posting, and while apparently there are several ways in which SMART data can be cleared, I found nothing about only resetting logs and/or individual attributes. I'd appreciate a quick pointer as to the best way to accomplish my particular goal, if at all possible.

Thanks in advance :)

Try SeeTools for Windows -> Fix All -> Quick

Thanks for the response! I've never used SeaTools before. I'll look into it, but are you sure it can do what I'm looking for? A search suggests it's rather a method to repair damaged sectors, and (fortunately) I don't have any in this disk, just a SMART log entry and a single attribute I'd like to zap.

Regards

Find a golden fish then....

Why would you like to reset it? It is a good thing to know status.

Under normal circumstances I'd agree, but I already know the disk is fine, so it's bothersome to see warnings about these things every time I check the SMART data. That's also why I want to preserve the rest of the attributes, they're the ones actually giving an accurate picture.

I also have never done anything like this, so it's a good opportunity to learn new things (obviously I plan to do research before diving into specialized software, serial TTL and such).

I could be wrong, but I don't believe Command Timeouts are cumulative over the life of the drive. Instead I believe they are a rolling average.

Seagate SMART Attribute Specification:

That's good news if true, it basically means the problem can be solved by using the disk long enough :)

Any hints about clearing the SMART self-test logs?

The logs are finite, ie they allow for a fixed number of entries. I think if you perform enough short self tests, then any "bad" tests will eventually be shifted out. Look up the ATA command specification if you want to see the structure of these logs.

That's a bit like using a flamethrower to squash a bug, but well, if it gets rid of the bad entry... :)

By the way, nice signature (and I agree completely!).

Would this work for clearing the Ultra DMA CRC Error Count (c7) attribute?

I have a number of vintage WD 60-120 GB disks with only this error. And it was specifically caused by bad cables. Like to clear it so everything reads correctly as it should.

I don't know whether WD treats this attribute in the same way as Seagate. I would perform a full surface scan and hope for the best.
