Hi,

I'm new here and would like some advice before I do anything dumb.

My NAS drive was hacked back in February and everything was locked with deadbolt ransomware. This in itself was not an issue as I had everything backed up on another drive, and/or still stored on laptops etc.

I recovered most of what I needed from an external Iomega HDD. I came back to this a day later to finish recovering the data, but found the drive was no longer visible in Windows (Win10). Windows beeps to acknowledge that something had been connected, but no drive appears. I checked in Disk Management, and can see the drive, but it shows as 'Unknown' and 'Not Initialized'. I've tried connecting to different machines, but always the same.

I opened the Iomega unit and found that it's running a Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS 7200.12 1TB HDD. Google suggests these have a number of common 'issues', and I ended up on this forum.

I'm reasonably tech savvy and quite proficient with electronics. I do have a USB to TTL adapter and the ability to connect directly to the HDD, but don't know how best to proceed. I've re-flashed BIOS chips on laptops before, but never worked on a failed HDD.

When the drive is powered up, it spins up as normal and doesn't make any odd noises or clicks. You can hear a second or two of normal disk access noise when you first power it up, but quiet after that. I think the drive keeps spinning until the power is removed. I've tried a variety of Windows based recovery software, but nothing works because the drive isn't visible in Windows. DMDE is the only one that can actually see the drive, but can't do anything with it. It's listed as 'Disk 2 - 2.2 TB - USB - Iomega Iomega: 1.f: FF310005280000000000'. If I try to scan the disk, I get 'LBA: 0 (try 1): SCSI I/O Error'.

Hopefully that's enough to get started. It's not the absolute end of the world if I can't recover the remaining data (mostly photos), but I'd REALLY like to recover them if I can. Would consider paid options (UK Based) if there's nothing I can do myself.

Any assistance would be great.

Thanks for reading,

Ian.

Hi Ian

You have two options here:
1. Consult a Data Recovery professional and get your data recovered. At this point, and based on your description, chances are it shouldn't be too expensive. But that's just a guess at this point. I suggest Sean at pcimage.co.uk .
2. Take the DIY route accepting the risk of losing everything along the way. In that case, remove your drive from the Iomega box and connect it directly via SATA to a PC. Connect the USB to TTL and get a terminal output. Post it here. This will help diagnose the drive. To recover your data, run linux, download HDDSuperClone tool and image your drive onto a new one. Then, recover data from the clone using software like DMDE or UFS. If you have any questions about each of these steps, specify.

As always, your safest way is option 1., but it's your data = your choice.

Best of luck.

I'd certainly try that first. If that doesn't give you access don't just drop it into your local pc repair place to play with use a proper recovery professional.

Thanks guys.

I don't have easy access to a tower PC to attach the drive directly to SATA. I'm laptop only these days. I guess I could possibly pop it in my CAD workstation at work.

I've got a spare ATX power supply and USB to TTL converter setup at home. I tested with a similar Seagate drive last night, and I get output on a PuTTy terminal. I guess there's little risk in seeing what output I get, as long as I don't try and change anything.

Are there any particular commands that I should run, or will it show errors as soon as it connects?

Thanks,
Ian.

You'll get out immediately after powering the drive (reconnecting the power after establishing serial connection is needed). Sometimes this may indicate and error.

Obviously you want to be very careful about entering commands but you should be safe with read commands like ctrl + z,ctrl + a , ctrl + I ctrl + L. If you haven't already checked the smart values /1 N5

Excellent. I’ll hook it up this evening and report back with my findings.

Thanks,
Ian.

Right then..

Here's the output from the read commands you listed before. I'm guessing the smart values probably shouldn't all be zero. No idea if the registers are good or bad.

What does the drive log show when it is initially power up. Not return smart isn't a good sign.

Not very much from memory. I think it just says Rst X20M or something similar. I’ll check in the morning and post the exact message.

You should get something more - you may need to leave it a while, or spin it down and then up again. I don't want to randomly start suggesting commands.

Unless I've missed something, nothing you've posted so far would suggest the drive is actually reading from the platters.

I've left it for several minutes with 0x20M on the screen. Nothing seems to happen until I hit it with ctrl Z.

I used ctrl C to spin down/up etc and get a similar response.

ASCII Diag mode

F3 T>
Spinning Down

Spin Down Complete
Elapsed Time 10.526 secs
Delaying 5000 msec

Jumping to Power On Reset▒
Rst 0x20M
ASCII Diag mode

When it gets to 'Rst 0x20M' after the Power On Reset, it just sits there again. Ctrl Z getting me back to the ASCII Diag mode prompt.

Not sure the relevance of the funny character after 'Jumping to Power On Reset', but that's what came up.

Do I need to wait longer to see if anything comes up after power on, or should it show something within a couple of minutes?

Your drive has reported damaged sysfiles and the translator isn't loading.

I think it's time to get advise from a pro in your area.
Alternatively, you can keep going the DIY path, but things can get nasty.
PM me if you need more info.

I left it for a reason - even though as you know I'm strong supporter of DIY.

Thanks Guys.

I'm in agreement. I'll get in touch with Sean @ pcimage before we potentially make things worse.

Ian ,
These drives have a issue thats common in these drives ,If the drive is not clicking then its a good chance sean can recover the firmware issue and clone the hdd to a working hdd and get to your data ,BTW assuming you manage to solve the firmware issue you still have to clone the hdd ,BTW even for cloning you can get lots of data with HDDSuperclone ,Anyway if they are in seans hands they are in safe hands ,You can also contact andy watson my friend

Thanks. It’s all booked in with Sean now. Hopefully some good news next week.
