WD2500JB change PCB U12.

May 18th, 2022, 16:13

I tested with a heat gun that was a little bigger, around 2.5cm in circumference. Got both U12 off smoothly. But the card now does not seem to start or give any start to the disk. They look completely except slightly burnt on contact plastic. Guess you should have a smaller one as indeed surrounding components are sensitive to heat? Tested another card and they became the same. But without anything burned.

I tried the card without the pcb connected and it didn't start. Do i need it just for the disk to start? Have i burnt the 2 cards for using a to big heat gun? I only had it for max 6 to 10 seconds.

Is this a data recovery task, or are you just practising? Do you have an SPI flash reader?

Yes from a drive with a broken power card. I had 1 broken drive that worked when i switched the card from one of the working. The only thing was i forgot to switch the pcb from the working. When i had done it the drive won't even start. Can i have burned something? It was my first time.

No flash reader unfortunately

Is it possible that the original fault on the original PCB damaged U12? Is the SMOOTH chip burnt?

Re: WD2500JB change PCB U12.

Smooth chip? I am a beginner. The original pcb didn't even gave any power to the drive. I tried with my other working card and then it worked. But i forgot to change the U12. When i had changed U12 the card didn't gave any power to the disk. Have i burned any sensitive parts? Should the pcb start the disk without U12? I tried but no power.

Sorry, it appears you may have an older PCB. I was asking whether the motor controller chip (SMOOTH) was burnt, but this may not be relevant in your case.

Are either of these boards yours?

Sorry i should have posted. I tried with the second card and right U12 but it don't even start the disk. Shouldn't the disk start without U12? https%3A%2F%2Fwww.imagebam.com%2Fview%2FMEAKAKB

Nothing will happen if U12 is not present.

Thank you. I suspected that. And the disk cannot even spinup without it? Can i use some glue to the U12 to get it in right place? It looks to be a little misplaced.

U12 contains the boot firmware. It's like a BIOS. The motor won't do anything if U12 is not present.

I will try to get another try with the heat gun. I will post a detailed photo after.

Maybe you should invest in a proper hot air station. Heat guns are more appropriate for stripping paint.

The best photos i could get. No motor response. https://www.imagebam.com/view/MEAMTWC

I guess it is important that the U12 is exactly on the right place? I have tried 3 different. Still the same. No hard drive motor response. It don't even start.

Does the U12 need to be attached in a certain way. With the text in front or backwards?

There's an indent on the chip this is pin 1. It goes to pin 1 on the pcb, your pictures are not clear enough to see if there are any marking (a dot, triangle etc) or a pin number. Looking at the last picture you took Id say it was bottom left.

Thank you. So there are a No 1 pin on the U12 that should be on no 1 on the pcb?
