Hi, my name is Toni and I am from France. I have a problem und a few question.
I will post the exactly model of the WD RED later. I have two WD Red in a NAS. Now both hdd are defective, the don`t work, that means that they don`t run up! The motor doesn`work. It is unbelivable that both hdd have the same error.
What do you think - is the electric the problem? Are the borads defect? Is it possible to change the boards?
Plase give me an answer. Thank you

You don't need to get a new board if it's just a fuse or diode. New board means transfering ROM.
Check those in red.

And also check the 2 fuses, r60 and r43 for continuity.

Thank you all!
I will test it.

You`ve got a private mesage.

O.K, i checked it with my multimeter. The multimeter was set to 200 Ω.
D4 = sound
D1 = no sound or less than 1 second
D3 = no sound or less than 1 second
D2= sound
R60 = 0
R40 = 0
R90 = 01,3

Sorry,
r 60 = sound (continuity)
r 43 = sound (continuity)

D4 is shorted. Remove it. Then check the PSU inside your NAS. It is overvolting your HDDs on the 12V side.

Thank you! Ist this the only Problem? What avout the resistances?
How shall I remove it? And then? Solder in a New one?
The NAS will never be used, 10 years old.

Thank you!
just snip it with flush cutters or perhaps fingernail clippers)
Ah, o.k. And if IT is removed? Sorry, that I ask, but ist IT necessary to solder in an new on?
July 3rd, 2022, 16:31
It's not necessary, but you will no longer have any protection from overvoltages if you don't replace the diode.
July 3rd, 2022, 17:33
Thank you.
Yes, but to copy the data in a pc or with an external adapter should be possible, or not? 'In a pc or with the adapter should no overvoltage be there.
July 3rd, 2022, 18:24
Some adaptors have poorly regulated supplies. It would be best to install the drives inside the PC.
By the way, many NAS boxes use Linux file systems, in which case Windows won't mount them. In such cases you could try "Linux Reader for Windows". DMDE should also be able to see the files. Alternatively you could boot from a Live Linux CD.

Hello, thank you.
Yes, I will Install IT directy in the PC with a S-ATA cable and Power Adapter.
Yes, the NAS usw Linux, I will User a Linux Like Knoppix or KaliLinix.
Shall I do a dd with Linux? But there ist no Mechanik defective, normally dd ist mit necessary.
One question: how exactely shal I remove the diode? I won't damage another Part on the Board.
But at first I will measure ALL again - secure ist secure.

You can snip the diode with flush cutters (as explained in my FAQ).
July 3rd, 2022, 19:47
Yes, that is clear. Alternatives with a fine screwsdriver. But in tn the middle between the both silver contacts?
July 4th, 2022, 11:47
TO BE absolutely secure, the Diode which ist marked with an Arrow hast to be removed - right?
