Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

So, Ive got a sort of dead 2TB firecuda (ST2000LX001). Not detected in the OS or in the BIOS.
Drive spins and SMART data can be read if connected with a usb-sata adapter.
I have connected to the diagnostic port and the drive is booting but immediately goes into a loop with the error 'SP Regen Fail'.
I can enter the terminal but can't run commands as I get the error 'diagnostic port locked'

What are you trying to achieve here? Get data? Make the drive functional again? Access terminal?

To unlock the terminal you'll need a tool like PC-3000 or MRT that can modify the ROM code of the PCB and send an unlock handshake. I'm not sure what are hoping to attempt in the terminal anyway. It's certainly not a drive you want to go throwing a random m0,3,6,,..... type of command at if you don't know what you are doing.

If you're just learning data recovery these drives are not where you want to start. Unless you have the tools you've going to get nowhere.

Yep, wanted to try to recover the data. I don't really want to be defeated by a HDD as a computer scientist (so I'm not entirely clueless), but as far as I understand it, without a tool like PC-3000 there is no way I'm going to be able to unlock the diagnostic port. (thanks seagate)
Yeah, I thought these were the responses I'd get. I dont have access to specialist tools so I guess I have to accept the data is gone.
And, yep, pretty much a case of learning as I go along.

If you need the data you can always send the drive in to one of us to recover but that wont further your learning.
It's not just seagate locking drives down, wd are the same. Solid sate brings it's own problems.
