Hi All,

Drive in question:
3.5" Seagate Barracuda
S/N: W1F53T7W
Model: ST3000DM001
FW:AP54
Product of China

Problem: The drive came in with clicking heads so I sourced a spare drive with the same model and had the same first 3 characters of the S/N of the source drive(faulty drive). After I replaced the heads in the source drive the heads failed. After some research I found that the pre amp for these drives must be the same in order to gain access to the SA(this could be why the heads were rejected by other spares as well) . The only problem is I don't know how to find the pre amp value for the HSA as the source drive heads are not working so I cant do it in command\terminal\utility mode.

Question: My Question is, is there another way of finding out the pre amp value with these kind of drives and if so, how?

It's in the ROM and can be read with and displayed with PC3000.

If you don't have PC3K, upload the ROM and I'll find it for you.

Move the new heads back in donor drive to confirm they are still working.
This is a Grenada drive (should have been named "Grenade") Check original heads and ramp for debris also check ramp for cracks.
Some of these requires enormous patience and a lot of head cleanings and ROM mods to get it running again.

Read the ROM with PC3K F3 utility and follow the Ace instructions on comparing the two modified ROMs and it will show you the preamp details.

Open the drive cover and read the label on the heads connector.
