I have got this 2 TB disk. It has 6 heads. Customer wants to recover single txt file only. Disk get ready though sometimes it stays busy while entering utility .
I think Head 1 is badly damaged , when I disable it ,drive at least starts reading. Head 5 reads some sectors but gives small read errors at at some intervals.
Customer has given approval for FW based recovery as it is not practical to transplant heads for single file.
I have been able to locate required file but it is incomplete and required folder is not having all subfolders.
(obviously because MFT's are not read properly.)
Is there anything I can try on firmware level

Select the file, build the map this will tell confirm it's spread across the bad head. If it is enable the head just for the file and keep trying. Won't help if the head is really dead though.

Thanks Lardman
I will create map of required folder in DE. But to make operation smooth is there anything I can try on utility level.
Samsung drives have relatively simple firmware but these drives are rare & I haven't worked on them in last 5-6 years.
If there is anyway to manage ,defect list or to address any known issues in fw that might improve results. (like SMP flags issue in seagate)

Chapters 5 & 9 in the samsung manual. I'd start with a head test. If you still have ACE support this would be a good one to asked to do remotely and follow along.

Why do you need to map the folder isn't it just one file you need?

Thanks . I have active tech support ,but I was keen to learn it all by myself.
Though only single file is needed , folder is having backup copies and other raw data. In case one file is having bad sectors , at least I can get it from other locations.
