Hi,

I have a 6TB HGST HDN72060ALE614 for data recovery. I have imaged with DDI about 80% of the drive with the original heads. The last 20% did not want to read regardless of settings with DDI/PC3K. I opened a ticket with AceLabs, but they didn't work with it as they haven't figured out the utility for it.

Did a headswap successfully figuring that would solve the issue. I now get an error saying HPA is set and it will abort any form of reading on DDI & PC3K (Drive will ID correctly and will not click/beep until imaging then it will beep on failed attempts to read only). I have used 2 sets of heads matching the Model#. MLC, FW, PN# and getting the DOM as close as possible to the original. Both sets of heads and the original now give this error. I assume its either incompatible heads, or I have somehow messed up the swap.

My department of repair is new at this company and AceLabs couldn't quite help. Looking for advice on what to try next here.

You can use HDAT2 to remove a HPA. PC3K should be able to do it as well.

What capacity is reported by the drive?

The label says 6TB, reported size on PC3K and DDI is 5589.03GB or 11721045168 LBA. I haven't been able to find the HPA removal on PC3K and DDI's utility I've noticed isn't the best. I haven't worked HDAT2 so I might need some help with it. Ill grab a test drive to work with it first and let you know

11721045168 is the IDEMA standard LBA count for a 6000GB drive. If a 6TB drive is reporting this capacity via Identify Device ("passport"), then there no HPA.

Which is what I figured, I have never seen a headswap create an HPA, atleast from what I have done and researched with my limited knowledge. Is it still worth setting up HDAT2 for this drive?

No, I can't see how it could help.

Heads swap on those without capabilities to work with SA, pretty bad idea. Now, you won't be able to solve it, unless you put original heads back and it will work again like from the beginning. But i doubt it will. This is CCB family. Do the same on two working drives, and you will end up with both dead hard drives with 90% chances.

Thank you for the information. There is literally nothing out there information wise on this family/model. I wish I would have known from the start, but this is my first time receiving this model in my shop.

The original heads are dead regardless. I was able to image about 80% of the drive. They were unstable, but would still read. Is it worth a shot trying to find any heads that would read or is this a lost cause at this point? I have another donor coming in from my supplier. I figured since he gave me such a good deal on this family it would be worth another swap. Let me know what you think if you have time.

I can probably extract the adaptive data from your ROM(s), if that will help.

This is where my inexperience will show again - I don't know if it will help, but if you are willing to do me a favor then I won't say no. I wouldn't mind having the adaptive data but not quite sure how it would apply here without utility tools. I'll need to grab my bios reader and pull the chip from the pcb and read it. I'll post the original rom and the rom of the donor hdd in a bit if not tomorrow. I really appreciate the responses, thank you
