Hello everyone
Sorry about the random order of information here, I just wrote it as it entered my head. I'll add to this as I think of more.
Unknown FW version atm, sticker says CC27 but I likely updated it if there was ever a update available.
Drive is from a media PC running 24/7. Hardware and software of said PC has been upgraded multiple times over the years.
First identified the actual drive being faulty at the very start of this month.
I was listening to music on the media PC, and it had long pauses after starting a new track, then it just disappeared.
It was doing this for an unknown amount of time when listening to music on another PC in my network, but I assumed it was something unrelated. The pauses were much shorter so I assumed it was buffering on my PC or network buffering or something like that.
I believe this was bought in Jul 2015.
I've read through all 127 threads with this model in the title and learned what I can, but I'd like some opinions on what to do next please.
I cannot afford a professional recovery service, but If worse comes to worse I'll wait until I can. Might never be affordable though for reasons I'm not going to go into here.
I bought a usb to ttl adapter but I'm yet to try that approach. -
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/302329541628I managed to get the drive to show when connected to an external usb dock and it only showed on my older laptop not my media PC.
I managed to copy just under 8GB of data before It threw errors in teracopy, after that I could still "see" the drive, but couldn't open any files.
This is when I stopped trying to do anything with it and haven't plugged it back in since.
This is the USB dock I'm using -
https://www.vantecusa.com/products_detail.php?p_id=184Dock works fine with another HDD when connected to the media PC.
Stopped showing in bios when connected to internal sata connecter on the motherboard. Didn't show in the external usb dock either.
When trying to use the ST3000DM001 with the dock connected to the media PC the device manager said "The USB set address request failed."
I assume (and you know what they say about assumptions) that the UEFI bios might be the main difference with the success of actually reading the drive on the laptop (laptop is from 2010 so no EUFI bios) Probably just something related to the chipsets or something like that though.
Drive spins up and sounds normal.
I'm in Tasmania, Australia if anyone knows any reputable DR places if it comes down to that.
I've already bought a new drive.
Was only using between 693GB to 1TB max space on the drive. I don't have an exact number, but the 693GB is the last known space used. And I think it was only about 50GB more than that at most, but saying 1TB to be safe.
Is there any safe diagnostics I can do to get as much info as possible to share here?
Thanks in advance for reading, and I look forward to any and all suggestions and advice
P.S. Sorry for the wall of text.
