WD20ezrx fried after PSU fault, PCB replaced arm not working

Hi all,

I'm a rookie to HDD restoration and although I have some nice to have data on my broken HD, its not worth spending too much moeny on saving. So this attempt of restoration is a bit of a hobbie project.

The HDD flared up from a faulty PSU: https://imgur.com/a/jEVy4et

After doing some googling I replaced the PCB with one of the same model number. I booted the machine up and no luck. The disk was detected in disk manager but returned a I/O error on trying to do anything.

I heard a noise coming from the HDD and thought I've got this far so I opened it up and couldnt see any damage visably, on booting the drive did this: https://streamable.com/bdyzkk

After some more googling, It seems like the Preamps might be the problem but I dont really have any clue on how to fix it.

At the moment I'm tempted to buy a HDD on the same model and just start swapping parts and hopefully get lucky but I thought before I do something as stupid as that I should seek some advice.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

You needed to move ROM (from source PCB to donor PCB) - ROM contains SA adaptives.
Powering on HDD without the lid is not a good decision. Surface damage to platter is likely.

At this point swapping parts will not help and if data is important I suggest to bring the HDD to a DR company.

Additionally, the drive now needs to be disinfected and the platters inspected for damage. Judging by the fact that: a) These drives don't manipulate a head screw underneath, so the heads can fluctuate when the lid screw is missing and b) The internal air pressure wasn't maintained, I would expect media damage too.

In short, you've added a zero to the recovery price.

You're likely to have killed the preamp and running it whilst open is likely to have scored the platter surface. If you want that confirmed you are welcome to send the drive in for a free evaluation, I waive the open drive fee.
