HDD desn't spin after Firmware copy

November 1st, 2022, 13:12

Hi Everyone,

I am curruntly trying to recover datas from a "Dead" HDD (Western Digital Blue WD10SPZX-24Z10T1) i assume that the original PCB has burned so i've bought another HDD replaced the PCB and the "dead" drive spinned was recognized by windows but i didn't get access to the files.

I've extracted the original memory content, transfered it to the new IC and tried back but now the HDD doesn't spin anymore... I've also tied to reprogrammed the new IC with its original content but I sill have so spin at all.

Do you think that corrupted datas in the original chip could burn the new PCB ?
Is there a way to recover my files even if windows tells me that the drive is not initialiazed ?

I am pretty new in HDD troubleshooting (that's my first attempt) pleas don't be too rude with me

Hello,

it's confusing. If you had copy the ROM to the new PCB, drive should spin.
If drive spins with valid ROM, 99.90% PCB is ok.

No, corrupted data will not burn PCB. You should contact professional, if it's PCB realted issue it shouldn't cost more than 300 EUR.

Thanks

Hi,

After some more trials I firgured out that the ROM has not been correctly flashed, I achieved to make the drive spin again and it is recognized by windows.

For now I guess the problem is only about ROM and F/W version (the two drive have different F/W). I don't want to go through a pro because the lost files don't worth a lot and i have almost everything in back-up and also i want to train on this for my personnal skills and satisfaction

I don't understand your current situation. Are you saying that the drive is now spinning up with your donor PCB plus patient ROM? Your original patient ROM dump in your other thread was bad.

This is my WD ROM analysis tool:

Is your PCB 2060-800066? If so, then this PCB is "MCU locked" which means that you must try to repair it.

Did you test the TVS diode and fuse?
