Hello everyone, I hope someone in this community could help me to understand what's wrong with my old hard drive

Forewords:
All sensible data has been already backuped, so I have no reason to contact an expensive recovery service. I'm trying to do my best only for fun, but only in the last two months I'm discovering how tricky is an HDD (not mentioning the mechanical aspect)

The HDD is quite old (2012) and I've already replaced it with an SSD and moved as secondary disk.
The HDD started to desappear occasionally at latest boots requiring a reboot to be correctly recognized by bios, so its failure wasn't a surprise.
1. The disk never sounded weird, so I thought that replacing the pcb could restore the drive. Of course I was wrong.
2. Searching on this and other forums I tried to apply the "Busy bug" procedure, I stopped after clearing the SMART statistics because I realized that I was on the wrong direction and I could only make it worse
3. While waiting for another ST1000DM003 (used but healthy), eventually to sacrify as "donor", I studied better the Seagate Terminal and I gathered several informations (attached)

Now I'm supposing that the fw Is not loaded, this could explain why the Terminal is unlocked, differently for the "donor" HDD, but I need a confirmation from some expert.
The P-List is readable and huge.
If I'm right and the firmware is not loaded, the next question will be: can I upload the firmware into the ram directly from terminal or at least try to rewrite it? There's a free-ware/trial tool for that?

Thank you in advance for your attention, follows an extract from the console activity attached to the post,

Alessio

This leads nowhere imo. If the data is not important, why ordering a donor and investing in recovering the bad drive by sacrificing a good one
There is no point in investing time in posting advices either, even no point in this very post, but i gave some of my time to make it...

Try my ZOC script:

ZOC Scripts - Seagate F3 Arch - Set Mode Page Parameters :
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=113&t=1867

Answer "N" to the Media Cache prompt, "Y" to all the others.

This script switches off certain aspects of the firmware which are probably causing your drive to remain BSY.

Head 0 is bad.
You can turn it off and get 500GB HDD.
You need special $$ software (such as SeDiv, MRT,...) and knowledge.
A lot of knowledges. :) Donor is not needed.

Ok, my major interest is "to understand", and if I could make the hdd visible again will be a great satisfaction.
So, I thank you all for your replies, but I'd like to know:

SWM says that head 0 is gone. Which information in the log suggests that? The head resistances are quite similar. And why the donor is useless? Couldn't I try to replace the heads?

I saw this scripting language for the first time, so it will keep me sometime to study about it and other interesting links. Just a couple of questions: can the script make things worse? Referring to the log, there's any clue that the drive is in a BSY state?

thank you again
Alessio

The script turns off various firmware settings. It does the same thing as PC3000. A drive often remains BSY if there are pending reallocations.

Replacing heads makes sense for data recovery.
You said that the data was copied and only repairs are needed.

To remove busy, just change the high byte of PerformanceFlags in the terminal.
And by control R in the terminal, bring it to readiness via SATA.
No power switch. On power-up, the DISABLE_IDLE_ACTIVITY bit will be set to zero.
Changing other parameters is only needed for data recovery. To repair will only interfere with the analysis.

Only "sensible" was copied, there's a lot of not vital files not copied due to lack of space on backup drive (I know it sound strange nowadays for only 1TB but that is).

Ok, so as first step I'll try to restore SATA activity following your istructions, if it works I will launch seagatetools (or a better one if you can tell) to collect more informations.

thanks

After all, you need data.
Then it's not for me.

Data is not important, the hdd it self even less. I want to know what gone wrong whit it and try to restore. I'm prepared to fail. If that premises are not in the spirit of this forum please let me know and suggest a more appropriate one.

I set to 1 the DISABLE_IDLE_ACTIVITY and reboot the PC, no effect
I set all others flags (excluding media cache) as suggested by fzabkar, no effect

in the mean time I downloaded with YModem files 093 1B 346 and few others, just in case.

One aspect that I should mention: when I connect the SATA data connector the PC boot is very slow (the BIOS splash screen stands for long time), and when I hit CTRL+Z it takes about one minute to show the F3 prompt

I hope this could give a further clue
