We received a Toshiba MK5076GSX drive for data recovery.

Customer said it was dropped. So we opened the drive, no head stuck and no visual signs of damage on the platters or heads under microscope.

Next tried to start the drive, no signs of life.

So we checked the pcb (G002825A), it had a broken fuse on 5V, which we restored, checked again and now all the chips are powered with the proper voltage (MCU, RAM, Motor IC, EEPROM), but still no signs of life.

We grabbed a tested donor pcb (G002825A) coming from MK6476GSX, swapped EEPROM, connect to MK5076GSX patient and surprise, still no signs of life.

Than we tested donor pcb with donor eeprom onto patient drive. Now the drive spins, Can hear heads going back and forth a few times than drive gets ready, but cannot read id.

At this point the attention went to the EEPROM, thinking it may have damaged / corrupted firmware.

But suprise again, the eeprom is an ST25P40VG which my TNM5000 or the RT809H programmer don't have in the list and obviously cannot detect.

Anyone know a programmer that can read this chip?

select another flash manually with same params and try to read it. BTW, it is quite surprising any reader can't work with 25P40, the most basic chip ever...

I think it's just a regular 3.3V SPI flash memory.

This PCB has a Winbond W25X40B in that location:

Edit: The actual or equivalent part number could be M25P40.

And if ROM is gone I can't do anything about it as well. Sorry.

it depends how it is gone. maybe corrupted but not completely erased/smoked...

Thank you all for the tips.

There is an STMICROELECTRONICS M25P40 chip in RT809H supported device list.

I'll try this way monday when i'll be in office and update result.

Have a great weekend!

Patient chip is completely dead. I connected another working ST25P40VG to both programmers, and they both identify it as M25P40.

I don't have the knowledge to do anything about this, so case is closed.

Thank you all again. Have a great day.
