Toshiba MQ04UBF100 USB drive head swap

April 5th, 2023, 11:49

Hello
I have a damaged Toshiba 1TB MQ04UBF100 drive
After performing a succesful PCB swap using a MQ04ABF100 drive, the patient drive was recognized, and started imaging.
It was doing it slowly, and with some errors.
But after the first 18GB imaged, I heard clicking noises, and there was only black squares on my MRT DE.

My question is:
Is it possible to do a head swap using the same MQ04ABF100 donor drive?
Or I must look for a USB identical hard drive model which I don't have.

Thank you

Is it possible to do a head swap using the same MQ04ABF100 donor drive?

yes, it is possible, but it will probably screw up its SA...

SA could be screw up because this is SMR drive, right?
Pepe, are you referring to dynamic translator damage?

yes, there are several huge smr-related modules . HDD likes to update these. If write-ability is poor these files come to be no longer readable

Thank you Master,
how to access/backup to this huge smr modules?
MRT doesn't have such option, probably even pc3000 is able.
As i know at the moment is possbile to access only to CPs files. :(

Humm,
And Write Ability cannot be checked with using a donor head until its not installed in patient ,Then as you say those so called smr modules will be updated as new set of head is installed Haa Haa ,So its a cat and mouse situation .The best would be block write access of the head " Physically " .

so once the SA is damaged even if you were to change a set of thesis again you would not get the structure, right? Or if the next set is better is there a chance the disk will be able to update the needed modules? How do you think it is feasible to physically block writing to heads? This topic is very interesting.
