Hi all, I hope you can help with a strange conundrum I have here. I have a selection of WD red NASware 3.0 drives.
They range from WD40EFAX and WD60EFAX but also WD30EFZX, WD40EFZX and WD60EFZX
But all suffer from the same strange fault… upon power on they don’t spin however give a single very quiet ‘tick’ from the PCB? And become ready very quickly on PC3K…
I’m not familiar with this family of hard drives so I’m not sure what to try next... So I reach out to the community for any guidance…
Thank you
:)

Is SATA power pin #11 grounded?

Hi Fzabkar, so it seems, it’s a good idea but yes they are. I did test different capacities and also models from my selection but all same… from pin 11 to ground is zero ohms when power is applied I even put extra ground wire just in case but the same characteristics repeat…

So I managed to find a spinning clicking WD40EFZX and performed the following tests with a non-spinning WD30EFZX…
Put the TICK pcb onto the CLICK hdd and it spins
Put the CLICK pcb on the TICK hdd and fault remains…
I then thought Preamps and got permission to open a non-spinning HDD and found all heads ripped from arms…
I therefore conclude the spinning clicking drive still has a functioning Preamp enough to spin up the hdd
However the non-spinning drive the heads ripped off and killed the Preamp and so doesn’t spin up (guessing some short circuit?)

How is it that all drives have the same fault?

The client isnt saying much... I guess the NAS box was moved whilst powered and maybe bumped?
