Long story short my dad's power supply went bad and I didn't think anything of it, changed it out and 2 weeks later both his hard drives went bad.

The more important of the two that contains some of his work files is a Barracuda ST500DM002
When this drive is plugged in the computer takes 30 minutes just to boot windows and from there I can't do anything or the comp will freeze.

I've been poking around these forums the last few days and I've been able to connect to the drive with TTL, I really only checked the Ctrl z, changing access levels but it seems to be responding to commands.

But now I am not sure what to do. Obviously I want to get these files the F off this drive asap but I don't know where to start.

Thank you.

Connect TTL, power up the drive and post terminal output here.

So I installed ubuntu through windows using the wsl command and started up hddsupercloner but the drive doesnt show :( :(

Maybe tomorrow I'll try a normal install of linux on a different hard drive and try from there? Maybe some tom foolery going on because I'm using ubuntu through windows and not just direct.

I've been kinda following the steps in this thread https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php ... 1&start=20

Ok so following this other guide https://web.archive.org/web/20141222110 ... tefix/Home

I can now see it in Victoria with a sata cable, but shows up in windows as unallocated.

smart = bad? uh oh

Now the value of data on the drive decides you next step. If data on the drive is non important and paying for professional help is not an option you can continue DIY.

Data is not super important. But id probably continue with diy just because of the time frame

Do you know what a professional might charge? Ballpark estimate

Also what would the next diy step be?

Thank you buddy
