Hello Everyone! Yesterday, I pretty much built another pc and I had a Toshiba 2TB hard drive that I used as a backup & storage for pictures and family documents. Long story short, with the new pc, the PSU wont start unless I removed the PCIE to SATA cable feeding HDD, it was working right on my other pc so I took it back to it and it didnt read it as well... I tried other PCIE to SATA cables on the modular PSU (Corsair HX1000) I one of these caused the HDD to burn the SATA connector and even the SATA cable to the motherboard melted... I didnt feel the HDD move the internals at all.

Any advice would be appreciated, from what I have read, I could find a donor board with identical chips and swap the eprom, but since this was a case that burned the connector, I am concerned about internals such as the motor causing issues again.

The motor controller IC (0A73080) has a burn mark.

The 0.47 ohm resistor (R470) near the HDA connector also appears to be burnt. Can you measure its resistance? This resistor is in series with the supply to the preamp.

It is measuring 0.5 ohms after measuring it multiple times. I agree, the motor controller had something so I guess its one of the first things to go out?

So I found a board with the same board number, VCM Controller and MCU but different memory brand, is that ok? From what I have read I have to swap the EPROM to attempt to make the drive work again.

Is this the eprom? Anyone know what could have cause this?

Firstly, stop experimenting with modular PSU cables. Their pinouts are not standardised. What has happened is that you have applied 12V to the drive's 5V input. This has destroyed the motor controller IC and potentially the preamp on the headstack inside the drive.

The chip you have identified is a serial flash memory, aka "ROM". It does need to be transferred to a donor PCB.

Measure the resistance between these voltage test points and ground (eg a screw hole):

This will tell us if the preamp is shorted.

got it, i guess it is time to buy a usb to sata cable or is it fine to use a modular cable that avoids the 12v?

I measured the resistance between the voltage test points and the multimeter read resistance on all locations NONE were close to 0.

As for the TVS diodes, I also got resistance on both and measuring in both locations. One had 0.72k / 29.5k ohm depending on the direction and the other one 96k / 82k ohm.

The sata cable to the motherboard also got really hoy and melted. I forgot to mention that I plugged in the HDD while the psu was on (stupid move).

That means that you had power on the ground wires.

gotcha, that board is different than mine (0A90380) but found the same board with testing points on this site:

+5 to GND off - 11.12kohm
-5 to GND off - 0.352kohm
-5 to +5 off - 9.74kohm


+5 to GND ON - 7.55kohm
-5 to GND ON - 5.62kohm
-5 to +5 ON - 16.15k ohm

I did test the continuity for the fuses on the board, according to the post here: https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?t=36362 and found that one of them is shut.

-5 to GND off - 0.352kohm
-5 to GND ON - 5.62kohm

These results seem to be reversed.

allright, I changed the batteries on my multimeter redid all measurements:

OFF = board is off HDD
+5 to GND off - 8.48kohm
-5 to GND off - 5.51kohm
-5 to +5 off - 9.74kohm

ON = board is attached to HDD (but not powered on)
+5 to GND ON - 11.13kohm
-5 to GND ON - 0.340kohm
-5 to +5 ON - 8.11k ohm

I get 5.5k ohm from GND to -5 ON (reversed) instead of 0.34kohm

Just try a replacement PCB and hope for the best. Good luck.

Got the donor board, but the MCU looks different even though both say 6045, is this a concern? I want to make sure before I swap the EPROM. VCM has the same number

Markings beginning with 0A or 0B are HGST part numbers. Therefore, the VCM part numbers are 0A73080.

The SDRAMs have different capacities.
