Hi

While back I got this Seagate ST3250823AS. On first power up (without SATA data) it didn't do anything suspicious. After connecting it to my PC it was detected fine. Sadly, when it was booting to windows the heads started "falling" (probably parking) then clicking and so on. It wasn't detected in windows after that. BIOS will only detect it if I power cycle the drive. Tomorrow I'll attempt to post the terminal logs and .mp3 of the sounds it makes. I'd like to know what might be the cause of this behavior. It was sitting outside for a while in a ziplock bag (there's even some alge on top of it) but the PCB and connectors are fine + the seal should keep out any outside fluids.

There are some power cycles made by me. Ill try to take the .mp3 file later today.
It looks like it can't write to sys sectors so I suspect SA damage?

And here's the audio of it. The time drive starts clicking the "head mask - FFFF" appears. This happened when the PC was detecting drives. Sometimes it gets detected fine, then screws itself, so SA damage?

And yeap, one of the heads is really dead. If the data is important then you (or data recovery professional probably) have to swap the heads from a donor drive. And it's better to have proper heads replacement tools because of internal parking area (close to spindle motor), these drives does not have an external parking ramp.

If you have professional tools you could try building a firmware loader

Sadly, all I have is an TTL adaptor and some knowledge about HDD's :(
I have got some info from a user that it might be heads which advised me to use /7X command. Sadly it complains about no valid cert codes. After I load them I get:
Code:
$NIWOT TIME OUT
Head Mask - FFFF...

I guess this points to the heads being good enough for the drive to initialize but not enough for it to work?
