I had a PSU failure in my QNAP TS-699-PRO containing 6 x WD Red 3TB drives . After replacing the PSU all the drives are now not recognised by the NAS. I removed the drives and tried them in a HDD dock which also doesn't recognise them but they do make a noise that sounds like head movement maybe but they don't seem to spin up. I tried putting one into my PC and it is recognised by the BIOS but it states 0GB size. I then took one of the boards off and tested the Diodes and zero ohm resistors, and they seem good. If the drive isn't spinning up then I am guessing it may be someone on the motor circuit gone? Hopefully the preamps are not blown but I have read the protection on these WD drives isn't the best. I have ordered a replacement board of the same version and will do a BIOS swap and see what happens. Any ideas on what else I should look for?
Thanks in advance :)

Absolutely no spin is usually power protection rather than preamp. Can you post an image of one of the pcbs nad your measurements so we can take a look at it. If all 6 have blown preamps that's going to be a costly recovery.

It doesn't make sense, but your drives are behaving as if they are configured to Power Up In Standby (PUIS). If so, then HDAT2 (with the /w switch) can disable PUIS.

Thanks for your quick responses! I tried to disable PUIS in HDAT2 but the operation failed. It also took quite a while for DOS to boot as the drive sounded like it was stuck in a loop of trying to initialize. The drive is recognized as: 'WDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0' [AHCI/SATA] 81h.
HDAT2 reported the drive as 0KB and 0 sectors, I'm guessing because it couldn't initialize. Here is a picture of the board. Currently I have just tested the diodes, capacitors and resistors on the left side of the board around the power input and couldn't find any obvious shorts or open circuits:

Thanks again and this is my first post so sorry for any ignorance :)

I didn't understood yet, does your hard drive spinning or not? If not, try to isolate preamp by a piece of paper, motor connector must still be connected, and then attach DC power. If hdd is not spinning - pcb is dead. If hdd is spinning - preamp is dead.

Usually it's R43 that gets clobbered, try isolating the the HSA as suggested. Do all the drives behave exactly the same ?

Thanks for the responses. I have isolated the preamp/heads connector and it still seems to make the same noise a bit like a Floppy drive trying to read so I guess it's the motor trying to spin up?
Both R43 and R60 are reading zero ohm. I haven't dug much deeper on the other drives but they do seem to be making the same sound when connected.

It sounds like heads are stuck on the platters... Can you record that noise to a voice recorder? Just start the recording and then attach DC power, few seconds will be enough.

aekhv, Thanks I have submitted a link to the sound but it is waiting for admin approval. I guess as I isolated the HSA and it makes the same noise it can't be stuck heads?

If the heads are stuck they will mechanically prevent the drives from spinning. It's very unusual for 3.5" drives not to have enough torque to free the platters from the sticsion.

Lardman, So sorry, yes, on deeper inspection the heads are stuck to the platters, I don't know what I was thinking

That's unusual, especially with all the drives. What happened to the original PSU that required it being replaced ?

If that's the case and all are on the platters don't keep trying to power them on you run the risk of ripping the heads off or worse scoring the platters.

DO NOT follow any youtube advice about spinning the platter with a screwdriver and moving them back they need lift off the surface and inspecting to make sure none get left behind.

Sorry, I misread your opening post.

Yes it is unfortunate if they're all like that. The original PSU went bang and tripped out the power to the server rack so I'm guessing it sent a power surge to all the drives. Luckily I have other backups so I think I wont waste any more time on this one. Thanks everyone for all your advice and help!
