Need Help!!!! Toshiba Canvio 1 TB External Hard Drive

May 26th, 2025, 6:01

Hi Everyone.

I have Toshiba Canvio 1TB External Hard Drive (USB 3.0). Few days back it stopped working.
When I opened the casing, I found that drive is spinning normally without making any kind of noise or defect but the chip located near the USB 3.0 gets hot instantly after plugging the USB. I have marked the front and back side on the PCB in the photos attached where it is heating.
I tried using different USB port and cables but none worked. It is not in the warranty.
I need help to find out what could be the problem.

Your heat source appears to be the inductor that is associated with the Vcore supply for the VIA USB-SATA bridge IC. I would first measure the 5VUSB supply voltage and confirm that it is OK. If the bridge is indeed faulty, then a PCB swap plus firmware transfer should recover your data.

Can you remove the PCB and show us the other side?
