I'm a new kid on the block so please don't be too harsh please.
I have a Maxtor 4k040h2. Some time ago SMART reported "Reallocated sector count" and all the trouble came - unreadable sectors.PC Refused to boot although SMART was disabled by BIOS and the MAXTOR was a slave. After a format it started working but for a while ... after using a repair program ( i don't remember the name) which "repaired" few sectors SMART reported unreadable sectors ( the repaired ones remained OK)...Now the disk works but ... when trying to close explorer window the closing is delayed for 5 seconds ....
So please recommend some reading or what should I do ?

You have 2 kind of problem IMHO.
1- you need to fix the SMART.
2- You will need to figure out or find soemone that can see what kind of defects your disk has - Logical or Physicals.

Or you can try by yourself if you have nothing better to do, or nothing to loose. ( no ofense, just my opinion )

you can do the following:
Get MHDD form this site
Make a boot disk and start it.
Before this Make your drive SM(secondary Master)
Do a SCAN (F4) to see how much the BADs are.
Write zero's to drive (some call it low level format) Be sure to get your important data from the drive. This operation si DATA DESTRUCTIVE
Do Again SCAN and see how much BADs are on the drive. If they are less or nochange.
You can do a SCAN with oprion realocate.
Sometimes when some sectors are marked as predicted BAD and put in G-list is posible SMART error to disaper after scaning drive a few times

Thanks a lot for this tip, so is possible to fix Smart problem using erase in a disk ? or some "zero fill" ?

Sometimes, just sometimes it is possible SMART error to disappear after a few cycles of reading/verifying the drive. I noticed that this most often happens on WD drives and no need of using pc3k ot some other stuff.

I'm agree your suggestion because I have this experience before.
But normally I'm move G-list defect to P-list and scan again then the SMART will be.

If the HDD is free from BADs but still reports SMART problems you need to run the respective test - Powermax for Maxtor HDD, DataLifeguard for WD, Drive Ftness Test for IBM and etc.. It will run some SMART tests and if everything is OK with the mechanics it will reset SMART attributes!!!
