Need help with MHDD

March 30th, 2006, 22:00

Dear All,

Good day. I tried to use MHDD yesterday. I have a 40GB Maxtor HDD (total 80,000,000+ sectors) and according to the scan test did by MHDD yesterday, sector from 0 to 8,409,999 have a lot of bad blocks but after 8,410,000, there is no bad block.

Therefore, in order to skip the delay of the disk, I use MHDD ERASE to erase the sector from 0 to 8.409,999 and I accidentally delete the MBR. Later, I use MHDD MBR to rebuild the MBR and my WinXP able to detect the HDD again (but became raw drive and need to format in order to use).

Now the problem came, after I rebuilt the MBR, how do I retrieve the data from 8,410,000 to 80,000,000?

Since I have problem to use data recovery software (Recover My Files) to recover the data (too slow because there are too many bad block in 0 to 8,409,999), can I use Norton Disk Editor to make two partitions (Partition 1: 0 ~ 8,409,999, Partition 2: 8,410,000 ~ Last Sector) so that Data Recovery Software can bypass Partition 1 and recover the data in Partition 2?

Is there any better method I can use? Please kindly advice.

Best regards,
T. Hirakawa

what are there size And of which type(like fat, ntfs ,etc)?

Thanks

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Find data recovery software that allows you to specify a region to scan. Most of them can do this.

Originally I only have one partition in this drive. The size is 40GB and the filesystem is FAT.

I think I did a silly thing by erase 5% of the sector. Fortunately I only can recover 85% of my AVI files with "Recover My Files". Unfortunately, this software cannot recover MKV files.
