Hi,

A friend gave me her Samsung MP0402H asking if i could recover some photographs on it. She had never had any problems with the drive but one day it suddenly was dead.

I have tried to attach it using an USB connection. It then gives 6 rapid clicks (sounding a bit metallic) and repeats that 10 times. I do not hear the drive spinning. After this it makes no sounds anymore and the red led starts flashing 1 time, 6 times, 1 time, 6 times, etc.
When I disconnect it and connect it again the same happens.

Does anyone know whats wrong with the drive? And whats more important, does anyone have some suggestions how to recover the data on it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you had data on it.It is better to take it to Nearest Data Recovery Company..
It is not easy for you(your Self) to Recover this Drive Data.

So there is nothing I can do, for instance like changing the PCB (if I can find a simular one)?
Does anyone know what could be wrong with the drive?

HI,

I have other experience, clicking is mostly caused by defective head in this model.
The PCB frequently has another kind of prblem, namely that it doesn't park the heads properly, thus leaving it on the surface making impossible to start the spindle next time.

regards,
pepe

But I do think the spindle doesn't start. I only hear the clicking sound but I don't hear the drive spinning.

Regards, PeVe

Are you SURE it isn't spinning? If it isn't spinning, it shouldn't be clicking.

I could be wrong, but I hear no other sound but the clicks nor do I feel any vibrations. Maybe it is a very silent drive ;)

Take off the top to ensure the drive is spinning, also you can the check to see if the is any damage to the platters.

With Samsung HDD's sometimes the heads will not park correctley leaving them on the platter, then when you power up the HDD it will not spin. If this is the case gently move the heads WHILE turning the platters from the center hold down assembly. Do this while the drive IS powered up.

This sounds like either a bad Pre-Amp or a bad head

I would like to thank everybody for their advise. I have managed to recover the data! After taking off the top I noticed that the heads were still on the platter. So I followed the procedure described by "harddrivefix" and that solved the problem. Thanks again!
