Hi there!!

I would like to update the firmware of my two st340014a drives (v3.06 in one of them and v3.54 in the other) to the newest version.
These are working on RAID 0 and i want to increse the performance updating the firmware.

I have spend a lot of time looking for info around the internet and i have found some files (like posted in HDDGURU) and some post but i don't know what must i do to update these drives.

Do i need a special cable to be able update the firmware? (seagate unlock cable with a MAX232) i have the schem.
What software i need to update the firmware? ( i have firmware files with ".bin" extension and others with ".trk")
I have found firmware version from 3.06 to 8.54, could you recomends me one of them?
Where can i found more info about this (in english)?

Thanks a lot and regards

Hello almoga123,

If you can't find anything on Seagate’s website I would recommend to keep things the way they are.

Reasons for this:

1. Only in specific cases a Hard Drive manufacturer releases a firmware tool to update a Hard Drive model.

2. U can't just flash the Firmware like on your Motherboard BIOS.

3. Most Firmware Flashes are performed, because of corrupted Firmware, not because of Performance.

4. You will need specific tools to perform updates and they are expensive.

5. You will most likely not find firmware downloads on the manufacture’s web site, therefore you will have problems finding the proper version and making sure it's authentic.

As long as your RAID is working, I would consider leaving things the way they are. And even if you could update the Firmware I don't believe that you would have any real noticeable performance increase.
If you want a faster RAID set go with SATA or even better with SCSI drives.

Updating the firmware is a very dangerous process dont do it if u dont really have to is any thing goes wrong it will become very hard to recover it .
