Help with maxtor HD issues!!!

I have purchased 13Maxtor HD's for a home file server. (1x: 6Y120P0) (12x: 6B250R0) After a year and a half I am starting to see problems with the drives. Several of them are giving me trouble as of late.
The symptoms are high pitched noise along with excessive and frequent clicking. I won't pretend to know much about HD's but I would like to save them if possible. I have a lot of $$$ invested in these drives. Luckily I have all of the data backed up. I can provide the model, serial, and firmware numbers, but I am still scanning all of the HD's and don't know exactly how many of them are giving me problems. I am hoping that it will be as simple as someone saying "all you need to do is update your frimware" but I'm afraid it won't be. I will be happy to entertain any idea you throw at me. I really appreciate all of your help. Just for fun, I decided to add a poll to see what all of you gurus think is the best make of HD's. Enjoy!

There were firmware updates for some DiamondMax 10 drives. They weren't targeted at strange noises but at solving compatibility problems mainly with nForce4. I'd ask Maxtor customer service if there is an update.
Or do a thorough research which firmware is the most recent that fits your drive and update all by yourself. That may however be a little adventurous. (See my experiences http://forum.hddguru.com/maxline-iii-pr ... t6517.html)

I have a good experience with maxtor 4d drives in maxtor if i would buy i would buy this hdd for my data .

Thank you for your replies. I will contact Maxtor and see what updates are available. I have finished the testing and I have three hard drives that are either inoperable or are dieing out of a 13 HD system. One thought I have had recently is do you feel that it may be due to abnormal ammounts of vibrations caused by the neighboring drives? I have them in a Cooler Master Stacker case, whith their 4 in 3 drive cages. Each cage has rubber gromets seperating it from the chassis, so that should help. But is it enough? What do you think?
