Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Ok guys this is a special problem over here...
Is just weird... I'll put it as simple as possible.
Just of the sudden
1st HDD was being recognized by windows but windows was not displaying its label, when I tried to access it it was saying it was not formated.
2nd Windows didn't recognize it anymore, although any restoration program like Partition Table Doctor, would recognize it... I made all backups and everything...
I found out that the problem was probably caused by corrupt MFT or MBR and I tried to resolve it... My bad... I guess I screwed up the whole drive.
I tried to format it with the XP CD... quick format said that couldn't be completed due to problems with drive... extended format just made the system hung every time I tried it.
I deleted all partitions, and then BIOS wont recognize the HDD at all...
I tried several programs to restore master boot record or make low level format just with hope but none of them detects my HDD... Only the Powermax diagnostic tool (it says that repairs the drive but nothing happens) and a program called MHDD Ver 4.6 (it reads the HDD but when I try the Fdisk or any option that try to write to HDD just make the system Hung)
Is just totally frustrating to lose 40GB because of nothing...
Info:
Maxtor 40GB 6E40L0 (firmware is ok... MHDD software reads all the HDD info without problems, but cant write MBR to it, nor FDISK changes can be made)
Might be Damaged clusters, I tried HDD regenerator, but it doesn't detect the HDD either...
Any info?

Post here table SMART if you can read this with MHDD. Many slim Maxtor has firmware problems. If the bios recognize a generic name: Ares, N04, Romulus..etc the firmware is bad.

Check the condition of the through MHDD or Victoria by scanning the media of the Hdd .

Ok... Firmware is ok as I mentioned before, the smart table was disabled and I used MHDD to enable it... but I'm not getting info from the HDD If I try to make scans, MHDD does it I can move through the HDD without problems... thats what I see, but if I try to do the ERASE or FDISK it says HDD not ready... I can do the INIT or the I and EID options... if I try to make the WRITE&READ scan it says "device not ready" or "faulty HDD"... Im not quite sure whats happening.
It seems to be that the motor of the hdd is running fine cause when I try the SCAN option at MHDD I can "pass through HDD clusters" or thats what it makes me believe... but I cant write or read from HDD at all... except for the basic information... ID option gives me the basic info... so it actually reads something from HDD...
I tried RESET... it says it does the reset it but nothing new happens... I also tried ERASE or FASTERASE... nothing it brings back "device not ready" or "faulty disk"
I've lost all the hope Im starting to think I just completely lost the Harddrive... but at least I want to know what happened?? what was the problem....??

Hi,
Most often these drives suffer from writing problems when they heat up a bit.
Probably the FW area is messed up a bit too.
Don't be sad about the drive, give thanks U got the backups
