New Directory Targets Owners of the Estimated 5.6 Million Drives
Projected to Fail in 2007

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA (March 28, 2007) – Data Recovery - Who’s Who today launched the internet’s first one-stop directory of data recovery services and software. The new site, datarecoverywhoswho.com, is a free resource designed to quickly and easily assist users in locating the tools, services and support necessary to not only recover lost files, but to ensure and maintain the integrity and health of files stored to virtually any media format including hard disk drives, flash memory, CDs, DVDs, RAID, and other digital storage devices.

“According to data from recent Carnegie Mellon University and IDC studies, an estimated 5.6 million drives are projected to fail in 2007,” said Emily Vinik, VP of Marketing for Data Recovery – Who’s Who. “There’s no shortage of companies offering data recovery services and/or software, however the real problem is – how does a user quickly identify which one offers the services that best fits their needs? DataRecoveryWhosWho.com is a free resource designed to meet the requirements of technology novices and experts alike. The directory includes information that can help users identify which organizations provide on-site support, on-line recovery or maintain a staff of technicians who already have the security clearance necessary to work on government sites.”

DataRecoveryWhosWho.com provides free file recovery tips from the leading data recovery specialists as well as a technology glossary and a quick summary chart listing eight key criteria to consider when choosing a data recovery service. The site also includes a directory of do-it-yourself (DIY) data restoration software solutions with in-depth explanations of what the software can do, cost, as well as a direct link to the publisher's web site and product page.

These forums are NOT the right place for posting your press-releases.

Maysoft - this forum seems to be the best forum for HDD data recovery topics, so I thought the group might find it interesting. There are no other detailed directories on the web like it. Others like DMOZ and Yahoo are simple one sentence descriptions in alphabetical order. I've tried to make it simpler to find the right service.

I hope members here can let me know what they think could be improved on the site.

Right, this forum is the best and the most democratic place for HDD-related conversations, but NOT for anyone's ads or PRs. Let's give all HDD-related companies permission to post their press-releases and advertisement here. Can you imagine what this place will look like?

If you need to tell about something interesting - please consider trying another approach

Just to clarify. I do not mind if someone posts interesting news about their products or other products. However I do mind when it is done in a form of PR and/or aggressive advertisement (like SalvationData did).

dr-who, you posted this:
“According to data from recent Carnegie Mellon University and IDC studies, an estimated 5.6 million drives are projected to fail in 2007,” said Emily Vinik, VP of Marketing for Data Recovery – Who’s Who. “There’s no shortage of companies offering data recovery services and/or software, however the real problem is – how does a user quickly identify which one offers the services that best fits their needs? Can you tell me where to find this study, or the name of the analysts please.

Thanks.

Predicted 5.6 million US drive failures in 2007

The 2007 disk drive failures calculation is based upon:

• IDC estimated US PC shipments for the last 3 years (2004 – 2006) at 188.3M units (IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, December 2006), http://reports.idctracker.org/webdownlo ... elease.pdf
• Using a disk failure rate 3% (the midpoint of a 2% – 4% field replacement rate cited in the Carnegie Mellon study (Bianca Schroeder Garth A. Gibson, Computer Science Department, Carnegie Mellon University – presented In FAST'07: 5th USENIX Conference on File and Storage Technologies, San Jose, CA, Feb. 14-16, 2007.) - http://www.usenix.org/events/fast07/tec ... index.html
• Multiplying IDC’s estimated three year US population of 188.3 million PC times the 3% failure rate = 5.6 millions drive failures predicted for 2007

P.S. - I heard that the US installed base is more like 250M, so the the number is actually higher, but for a press release I needed to go with something I could refer to.

Check out the Carnegie Mellon study, its gotten a lot of coverage.
