Dear HDD Gurus,

I have a strange problem with my HDD and I wonder whether you can help me.

Very rarely (let say about twice a week) I hear very loud metallic scratching sounds from my HDD for about 10-20 seconds. We tought that it is from some fan in the computer, but the last time this happened I stoped all of them with my finger (except the power supply fan, difficult...) and also WinAMP stopped playing music for a wile and the computer freezed. So now I am pretty sure it is the HDD.
From my experience if I hear such sounds from the HDD it means that it is completely dead, but not in this case - the HDD and the Windows continues to work after the sound stops.
A scan test with the gorgeous MHDD showed many many greens and about 30 browns. The S.M.A.R.T. sector relocation count was 14.
Anyway, no bad sectors after chkdsk, everything works as before (I dont see any difference in the performance for example), I am writing this as I am making backup of my files.

So, can anyone give me an idea what causes my problem and how can I prove that the HDD is bad? I am asking the second question, because here in Bulgaria sometimes it is difficult to use you warranty. And in my case the problem happens very rarely.

Cheers and thanks in advance!
Iliya

Hi,

I think it is already proved by MHDD the HDD is scrap. I would try zero filling (after backing up everything of course) then scanning with MHDD to see if it got better. If yes, it can be used, active direct cooling recommended.
If not, perhaps U need a new drive.

regards,
pepe

Sorry guys

Thanks pepe,

Yes, I will try zero filling as soon as I get other HDD and copy all my files. If this eventually will make the scan results good, how much I can rely on this disk?
I still wonder what the hell actually happens inside the HDD case when I here this sound.... Here in the office we have 4 more computers with the same HDD model (all bought at the same time last year) and if there is some defect by design we are in trouble.

Samo,

Благодаря за предложението за съдействие :-).
For happiness we haven't had big problems with the firm from where we bought the HDD. But not the same with many other BG firms. After all that bad experience, when a harddisk dies, we usually dont apply for warranty but just go to the magician at itemav to recover the remaining data. Now at least the data is not missing, thanks god.

Наздраве,
Iliya
