Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi All,
I have a 80GB WD Scorpio drive with ff: original specs in the label:
Model: WD800UE-00HCT0
SN: WXE606043843
DCM: HYHTJBNH
When I boot it up, it shows the ff info: (looks like it shifted to factory or safe mode?)
Model: WDC ROM MODEL-SCORPIO-- 09.07D09
Serial #: WDC-ROM SN# XYZ----
Can't do any operation with the drive. I would need to extract the data badly.
Would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Has the PCB been changed, by any chance?

Thanks for the reply. Am sure the PCB has not been changed by any chance. I have just removed it from its original ACER laptop.

U Need to know the ATA Registers what its showing, on ATA Registers, then u can take actions but need special tools wich access factory mode, if u are a user , put on the Hands from a Low Level Data Recovery Specialist
Best Regards

Correct, it's in safe mode. Looks very much like a firmware corruption.
There is nothing you can do without appropriate tools unfortunately.

Hi Beto,
Thanks for the reply.A bit familiar with ATA commands but may certainly be not on expert level.
After Power ON cycle (also on reset), TFR contains normal values, STS=50 and ER=01. The only command it is accepting is Identify command, all others give 51-04 (Abrt). It also doesn't accept any WD vendor commands.
When you say special tool, what's the best available to fix this problem?
Hi Starling,
Thanks as well. If this is indeed a firmware or SA corrupt problem, any helpful tips what should be done next?

U need to do this , start up, and check what show´s on ATA Registers, if after start up, and recalibrate shows DRDY DSC, then try to access sectors, if show, ERR ABRT on Registers, and no knock sound, could be SA Problem
How do u know it doesnt accept the WD vendor command´s because
ATA commands its not vendor commands
Acel lab products support this , and remeber they are only tool´s .

It doesn't accept your vendor commands because this drive is built on Marvell chipset and probably you send WD70Cxx commands to it.

Hi all,
Really I haven't gotten the solution yet til now.... few questions to wrap this up:
1) If this is indeed a FW corrupt, is rewriting ROM would resolve this?
2) If this is a SA corrupt problem, is rewriting modules would resolve this?
3) If (1) or (2) is the answer, what should I watch out for this WD drive type.
Worked quite a bit with WD drives, and am sure am using the right command set ( for this marvell chip) to initially check it....
Would really appreaciate to know what should be a suggested best next step, if you guys have gotten across of the same case, so I would not compromise further breaking the drive.
Thanks in advance for help and replies...

Hi,
Look at this...
http://www.nazyura.newmail.ru/000006.htm
MAVR_FL - Read Flash On WD-Hdd (For Marvell CPU)
CHECK_FL - Check Control Sum Flash Files For WD-Marvell (Check CS For PM Loader Config Strings And PMCBlk - Programm Memory Code Blocks)
...
