Hi,

I purchased a new HDD today, a seagate barracuda 7200 - 120gb non-sata drive (ST3120022A). It doesnt seem to work. The moment i install the hard drive my pc doesnt seem to boot. I cud observe that every time the system tries to boot after a few secs, it gives up and tries to boot again (This happens during the POST). I dont get to see anything on the screen. Infact i dont even get to see the normal post messages.

My config is

intel 845GVSR mother board
intel p4 processor @ 2.4 ghz
frontech 300w PSU.

I also tried unplugging all the other devices, dvd rom and old HDD and yet no avail. The HDD is ok, i got it checked.

Is this a problem with the PSU

I assume you have installed it as a slave drive? And that you're not expecting a brand new HDD to have Windows already on it??

Is the drive brand new, or used?

If it's used, then XP could be picking something up off it during boot, and not liking it. If so then u need to get it properly erased and/wiped.

Hi check your jumpers and go into PC bios and make sure your old drive is in the boot list.

Hi All,

I am installing it as primary master. I dont have an os on it. All i wanted to do is to find out whether my bios detects it or not. But unfortunately my system doesnt even boot(no startup bios messages and no beeeps). By the way i tried a new data cable tooo, doesnt work either.

It is possible that you have incorrectly attached the IDE cable (probably flipped it). If this is the case, though, there are high chances that you have damaged the DMARQ pin on the HDD (this will prevent the hard drive from working in the UDMA mode). Remove the IDE cable and check if you have any pins damaged.

Does the hdd detect in bios ?

When i tried to switch it on... post does not happen. I see nothing on the screen. I cud hear the "whirring" sound made by fan, it stops and then starts once again. which made me wonder whether the hdd is tripping the power supply. BTW i got it tested wit my wonder. its working fine on his machine

Pins are ok ... they are not damaged

If the drive works on another machine and not on yours the problem is with your cabling or PSU. I'd try another power supply as you are not seeing the boot screen period when you start your PC. It may be a cheap supply and is not pulling up one of the lines with the extra drive. Also check you haven't bumped a ram stick out of it's slot partially by trying to boot your PC with the new drive disconnected. Lastly try another 4 pin power connector from your power supply to this drive in case one of the sockets is making a bad connection and drawing too much current.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have tried all of the above. I guess my power supply is the problem. As i have mentioned it is a very old one with 300w supply
